Very interesting...where did you find this frame hiding?
I'm sure you have found the solution by now, but if you're using the correct size square taper bottom bracket, how can the crankset not fit properly? There's something else going on there if that's the case.
But maybe you're using a modern sram crankset! Who knows.

Regarding italian threads, a horrible hack to fix a bsa bottom bracket shell with mangled threads is to clean it out and cut new italian threads. The italian diameter is slightly larger so this works. That is one of the things i wish i'd known when i scrapped my old gt.

Hi jmgk :) the frame was from ebay...

Its really strange, ive not come across this before and ive worked on a lot of bikes. although the thread is reversed on one side as its meant to be, the threads are on opposite sides to what they should be... The bb i set aside for it was an ordinary shimano square taper cartridge which has been used quite happilly in another frame.

And yeah i think the italian shells are roughly 36mm and english 35mm

Here's an idea: put the chainset and mech on the left hand side. The only serious downside I can think of is she'll have to ride it backwards. Sure she'll get used to it.

A better idea: build it up with a single chainset and a shorter BB. Then it won't matter which way round the BB goes.

That would create more problems than it would solve id imagine...

it would need to be pedalled backwards either way, unless i fixie it (i dont think she'd be too impressed)
...and she rides slowly enough even with 21 gears to choose from

Swapping to the L/H side wasn't a serious suggestion.

But I can't see any problems with a 1 x 7 setup. The bottom bracket doesn't care which way round it's turning. It might eventually work itself loose with the threads are the wrong way round, unlikely though (especially with gentle use a sealed BB) and probably better/no worse than a threadless.

1 x setups are cool for pootling about. You should be able to get a wide enough range of gears for general riding and it's a simpler shifting setup (especially for a novice cyclist). I only use my middle chainring in town... Plus you lose a bit of weight. Win win.

Here's one I made earlier:

Re:

Ahh i cant tell sometimes

Yeah i guess the bb would work that way around, it would need a long ass axle though to make the crank fit and the LH arm would stick out a mile from the frame
Ive bought a threadless bb now, just need to get around to fitting it.

This build is sitting on the backburner at the moment as ive recently had a custom motorbike stolen :( and im spending a lot of my free time searching the internet and dealing with the insurance company... I will have to put up some pictures of the frame in its lovely pink powdercoat soon though

Sorry to hear re the bike. I'm constantly paranoid that someone's going to steal my Vespa...

Just had another thought. If you used an old-style adjustable BB you could just pop the axle in the wrong way round... of course you've got the threadless now, but hey.

Re:

On closer inspection its the bottom bracket that has the threads on the switched on the shells, and not the frame. it was a cheap one i bought from the ebay seller 'granniegear' with no mention of it being a left sided bb and now ive tried to fit it, the thing has f*cked up the threads in my girlfriends frame. Nice one GRANNIEGEAR!!

Re:

Ah, one of those rubbish un-26 bbs? You fit the wrong side first etc. they are for altus etc chep cranks.
It sounds like the bb is possibly wrong length for your cranks anyway.

Best bet: Go to a bike shop and ask them to chase the threads. If the bike shop you go to can't cut bb threads, they aren't a proper bike shop. The shop i am tech in would charge you £10 for that job and it's worth doing after the frame is painted anyway. Less problems later on. Buy new bottom bracket. Food for thought!

Re:

Yeah, one of those  it doesn't have any markings on it either which isnt helpful. Having the threads chased is next, much better if the threads can be used i think... Its just something else now though that'll have to wait for me to get around to doing

Re:

I maybe a bit late to the party here, but is it not worth trying a threadless Bottom bracket:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/YST-Sealed-Th ... TLm493ZWhw

They are for damaged threads and lock together without the need for the threads to be intact or correctly threaded.

It seems such a shame to waste the pretty pink frame now that you've come this far.

Mark.
