Phantom Private Messages

I've noticed of late that when I log into the site that I'm informed I have new messages, but when I go to my inbox there are none to be found...

Anyone else getting phantom messages??

I think this can happen if someone sends you a pm,but deletes it from their outbox before its send.,but you still have the notification :?

But a sudden rush of so many could mean a site error,more than likely :?

We had a spammer register yesterday and start sending everyone PMs. Thanks to a couple PMing me quickly was able to remove the account, however this led to these 'phantom' PMs. Sadly there's littlle I can do to prevent such spam if they take the time to sit and register, short of banning all new users.

Is there a way of only allowing people to PM once they have posted, say, 10 items on the forum?

If they were spammers, their account could be shut down before they get chance to PM, as people are pretty quick on here to notice spam, and action could be taken before they met the 10 posts needed to send a PM...?

Other web sites stop SPAM by have a code in a box which you have to write in before can reply
