don't forget that anyone could have their initials stamped on the BB instead of an SB number.

Please forgive my ignorance, whats an SB number?

To be honest it it is Peter Winnen's bike then that's brilliant, but I'm not too worried about it. I'm just delighted to have a SBDU frame to build up.

Thanks Shane

SB = Special Build ....

I've gotten some great information from over the past few days on different forums but am no wiser to the provenance of the bike. Its not the end of the world (It is what it is) but it would be nice to know. What we know or can presume based on the general consensus of comments (Open to debate here):

* The bike is an SBDU from 1987.
* It does not have a SBDU decal or a 753 decal.
* Forks have been replaced at some time.
* It seems to be the second bike of a "PJ"
* PJ was no giant but good enough to have 2 bikes.
* The bike is more likely to be 753 if it was from a professional team but not necessarily.
(Weighing it will tell the truth)
* There was no obvious PJ on the Raleigh Panasonic team around that time. (Peter J Winnen apparently rode a 56" & photos from the time support this)

So was it a sponsored amateur rider ?... Well according to Hillary Stone on a post of the provenance of a TT bike a while back: http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=305897&hilit=raleigh+beryl&start=30

"After Mike left the SBDU in 1982 there were lots of changes – frames for amateur riders were no longer given their initials and date – ........
There is a clear distinction between amateur riders and pro riders in my opinion. But where it is blurry seems to be with sposored amateur riders.......
I have had several frames from Raleigh pro and sponsored amateur riders in the 1990s – some have had the initials stamped on the frame as well as an SBDU number – more one of these frames was built from 853 so that dates the continued use of SB numbers until after 1995! Some have the rider's name and some not......

So could it be possible & this is only a thought; that the bike could have belonged to another professional team & was resprayed at some stage afterwards in the natty Panasonic colours? What other professional teams were out there at the time?

This could be completely off the wall but what do I know :) Any opinions or mild abuse would be welcomed :)

Thanks again Shane.

I don't profess to know much about SBDU frames and bikes, but by 1987 the Team Raleigh in Weinmann Team Colours was in it's last year (Banana from 1988 I believe) which would make this a late bike in these colours.

The crown on the forks on this bike is similar to ones seen on later Raleigh lightweight's, including M-Trax, so they could have been replaced by Raleigh themselves, although I'm not sure why they'd end up Red.

I have a much more lowly Raleigh frame that I've never managed to identify, so unfortunately guess work is your best friend from here on in.

Re:

That's a good point about the forks MrW. They are definitely not original & (Now that you've pointed it out) even look different to what tey should be....

Thanks :)

Re:

It took a bit of searching but I eventually found a set of forks that matched the red ones on my soon to be landed bike. They are from a '87/88 753 SBDU.
I was surprised how much searching I had to do to find a matching set :? I was beginning to believe they were not Raleigh at all as most other Raleigh forks have a visibly different crown. Most seem to have lugs at the side & mine instead has a larger centre lug when looking from the side. Others have no lugs. .. You live & learn... at least they aren't from a Raleigh Chopper :)
