I commute most days on an old Raleigh Pioneer Classic hybrid built up with a fixed gear and drops. It has huge clearance, but I have been running 25mm Vittoria Zaffiro, for commuting on roads and cyclepaths. I do rather like taking it off road though, so I thought I would find some larger, indestructible tyres that can handle a bit of mud at the weekends as well as the glass on my commute. The plan is fit something a little bigger and an easier gear, and use it for some muddy fun when the weather gets bad, as well as worry free commuting during the week. My commute involves an unavoidable football stadium, so there is a lot of broken glass to worry about - the current tyres are shredded.
The Tour Guard Plus looks completely indestructible (seconded by my excellent LBS), but I was wondering whether the tread is widely spaced enough to be competent on your average British bridleway / canal towpath. I'm not after great performance, but I need something that will work on paved and unpaved surfaces, and last a long time.
Anyone have experience using these tyres off road?
Cheers
