PACE RC100……HELP ADVICE NEEDED!

Dirt Disciple
OK so I have a slight problem. Basically the one piece stem steerer, at the end that bolts on the forks crown there is a protruding bolt thread over which a hexagonal plate sits and is bolt tightened underneath the fork crown.

My problem is this thread has snapped!! Don’t know whether I can ride without fixing but ultimately guess it stops the forks coming off and keeps the head set bearings from vibrating about.

So know there’s a lot of technical bods on this forum so was hoping for ideas around:

1. how is this thread fixed, will it come out or is it fixed / welded inside the stem?

2. if it is drilled out, can another be re-threaded in but guess this links in to the above how it is fixed / whether stem is hollow at bottom?

3. does anyone know anyone / company who could drill, re-fix the problem? Ideally around Manchester area?

4. any other thoughts / ideas etc?

Any help / advice would be appreciated as not very technically minded when it comes to things like this!! All in all need to fix the problem - some how? Photos to show the problem below.

I have seen these stems made in several ways, but on yours I would suggest the thread is brazed in. Any engineers workshop will be able to help you. cut the stub flush with the end face of the stem, drill it and then tap the resulting hole. You can then have a few dabs of braze added to fix in the new threaded section.

Alternatively you could just leave it as a tapped hole and then use an allan bolt to thread through the hex plate and into the stem, this will depend on how much thread depth you are able to have tapped into the stem, one of my stems is done like this...I assume from the factory.

If all of the above baffles you, just find a local engineers and let them have a go... just warn them not to scratch up the rest of it in the process.

Saw the end off and stick a star fanged nut up the end. Thats what i did with one I bought many years ago that was too long!

Fine if it's too long, however this one isn't and may end up too short if you took that approach... Which could be bad on the dental insurance front depending on the existing fit an how much would need to be removed to fit a sfn.

The threaded section is indeed brazed into the base plug during assembly. I think Jerky's idea of drilling and tapping for a bolt will probably work providing the base cap is deep enough.

Other solution of brazing a short section of threaded bar in is good too.

If you imagine the assembly to be like an ahead system but upside down, the thread/nut is there to adjust the headset play and clamp the whole together and provide a bit of security so it should not need to be over tight. The bolts in the crown are the things that hold it safely like the stem bolts in a conventional system

ah, I was just looking at the inch of steerer sticking out of the crown and assumed it was too long!

Chaps!

Thanks for all your responses, any idea who can do this work, as I can barely hang a picture on a wall !!!

Need a small workshop / fabricator type outfit but these are a dying trade! What about any forum members that can do this type of work?

Might be worth pm'ing justbackdated three posts above as he is the pace guru ? if he can't do it he maybe able to reccomend someone?

Appreciate that! Justbackdated you have PM - help help help!!!

Who else on the forum could do this type of work? It may link to me other problem which is getting someone to make me a square metal band to hold the m730 XT front mech to the square tube! Early RC100s had a band before a lug was welded on!

Try finding someone to machine you a metal band!!!

All these 'little' issues are preventing my two RC100 projects from being completed!!!

Nightmare ! And it's summer and I wanna ride them!

What is it that needs doing? Just the old thread drilling out and a new thread tapping?
I've never seen one of these!
