Some bicycles around that time used "U" brakes on smaller frames, I know Marin did, because the old style cantilever brakes with wide, sticky-outy arms would catch your heels when used on the rear. With later compact cantilevers and V-brakes it wasn't an issue so they stopped using "U" brakes.
