Orange Mr XC - Build Thread

Morning all,
Tonight I'm off to collect the Orange Mr XC I nabbed on eBay t'other night.
Not sure of the year of it yet - but I have a few Q's.

They were originally supplied with an 80mm fork - has anyone run anything longer on one? I've got a Manitou Splice Super that will do as an interim fork, which can be dialled back to 100mm - will this be OK?

I have a Hope headset & seatclamp lined up for it already - Orange Stalk+ and Orange SuperCross+ bars.

Would like to bung Hope disks on there eventually - any recommendations?

running a longer fork just changes the handling of the bike making it a little more sluggish feeling.

you can offset it somewhat with a short stem, but you may like the lazy feel of the steering.

at the end of the day give it a whirl with those forks if you don't like the feel change them.

Mmmm - Mr XC came home tonight - but it's a bit dark for a photo.
The guy I got it from was sad to see it go - so I need to look after it for him.

Photo in the morning - and start stripping bits off the FSR Elite - anyone want a '99 Elite?

Can anyone help - with the size of the bottom bracket?
The Orange webiste says I need a 73mm BB - but what size axle?
113mm or 118mm?

How do I work that bit out?

it depends on what cranks you're going to be using, and the chain line you're trying to achieve.

Haven't got a crankset for it yet - might be an XT or summat else appropriate.
How important is chainline?
Given that the chain moves up and down the rear sprocket, if the crankset is not spot on inline with the middle sprocket on the rear...????
And if the difference in the axle is 5mm - that's only moving the chainline 2.5mm on the drive side?

The concept of chainline is all new to me - so I may be entirely wrong in my understanding

honestly until i joined here i'd never even heard of a chainline lol.

i think the main issue would be clearance for the cranks on the chain stay.
5-10mm gap i think is the norm.
