Just got this from the fleabay. 1991 model, rear ubrake... I haven't received it yet, but it seems completely original apart from tires (I can get NOS perod correct Specialized GCExtremes or Darts any time) and saddle (a NOS flite is easily obtainable).

Now, I bought it because I needed a commuter I to use for occasional light off road rides.

I would like to hear your opinions; should I:
1 - keep it as it is
2 - SS it
3 - mount my Specialized rockcombo drop bar with bar end shifters
?
At the moment I'm more inclined towards the first option, but I've never tried a single speed and I have a weak spot for drop barred MTB, and my Yeti has hyperlites now...

Keep it as is, though get rid of the saddle and maybe fit some modern big non nobblies(DMR moto's, Halo's). Whats your commute like? City, country?Busy, quiet? Could have more importance than looks.

Oh and its against the law to swap parts from the big manufacturers, no spesh on a GT or vice versa  Consider this a warning.

Get them gears off! They only get in the way.

Good point, it's the reason why I cannot buy that wonderful NOS Spesh prolong ti saddle I've found...
BTW does this law include tires? In this case they will have to be black Onza or amber Tioga maybe
my commuting? Not aggressive riding around a "Costal town that they forgot to bomb down" as Morissey put it (actually they did bomb it quite heavily and i shouldn't joke about that :? )

I'd go this way too and when you wear the gears out, singlespeed it

Sorry, you lost me when you said you wanted to turn a Zaskar into a commuter and use it for 'light' off road duty.
