Hi

Can anyone help as am trying to buy a full bike from the USA the owner has come back saying 400+ usd for USPS and 700+ usd for a courier like UPS!! God that sounds high!

Anyhow I've now said lose the wheels and I'll take just frameset and components no wheels.

How much should this cost roughly?

What is the best / cheapest method to ship?

Am I right in saying a frameset only will fit in a "standard" sized USPS box and is therefore alot cheaper.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated so I can pass onto my US pal!

Cheers

I had a whole bike sent over in two boxes. The frame, forks and some other stuff in one, and the wheels and other bits in another. Each cost about $60-70 to send with USPS International/Global Priority (It was a 21" frame, so was big!). THere are strict limits to the size that can be sent, and careful packing is necessary to minimise the box size. One extra inch in length could double the cost.
You can find out the rates yourself here: www.usps.com

The restrictions to the UK via USPS from the US are that the box can't be more than 108" Length + Girth combined and the max. length can't be over 60". If the box can be kept under those dimensions then it is just a matter of weight and how you want it shipped. USPS has several options from Global Express (2-3 day) to Priority Mail International (5-10 days) to First Class (don't bother).

Here is a link that shows the size restrictions for each mail type and prices for specific weights:

And here is how the parcel size is calculated:
http://pe.usps.com/text/imm/immc2_011.htm#ep2367472

An example: A 40"x30"x8" box (108" total and would easily hold a frame and fork) that weighs 10lbs would cost $56.45 via Priority Mail International. You can calculate different size/weight/types here:

postage

I have just had a full bike minus the wheels delivered to Gloucestershire from New England by USPS for $116.00.
I think size is important

ask for two boxes, one for wheels etc and one for the frame and forks, i just paid $250 for USPS insured... some sellers charge a ridiculous "handling" fee...
