Oh no!... not another trackie build...finished!

Are you sure this is a shonky bike build or is this where you trade your way up to a yo eddy for £25 start?

(It has been done)

No i started with a paper clip and got a house in the end.

Things have moved on in the last months. Frame is polished in places, sprayed in others and now been lug lined. Just waiting for inspiration to strike for some decals, then a bit of laquer.

As for parts, well, i did empty the shed out.....then shook it really hard, and found some kit im to sell.

However to keep to my £25 spend, im not using those or that cash. Instead, i sold the frame, wheels and a few bits i wasn't going to need from donor 2. That gave me the cash to buy donor 3 that has a good set of wheels ( right age too) and a super nice front and rear mech......woooo hooo.

Finally, got to say a big thanks to @Blackers for giving me a chainset in exchange for a wheel building lesson! ( It wasn't quite that shiny or un- dinked.....im not that expesive a teacher!).

So im almost there......just need to assemble it.

Restored shiny goodness......

Last week was quite warm and finally gave me a chance to do a bit of home spraying.

The picture with it all silver, is the frame stripped, rust treated and ready for paint.

Shiny sections were then polished and decontaminated ready for spraying.

Other picture is the frame masked and primed, sprayed black, then unmasked, clearcoated and lug lined.

For those of you who have never tried lug lining....have a go. I find it pretty easy, but then i can pinstripe ( steady hands) and have the paint and reducer to hand. But, ive also used humbrol enamel with a couple of drops of standard thinners in with success too. The tool can be got for £5 on ebay.

So really its just the build up and some decals......inspiration has still not struck.....but im sure it will.

Wheels..finally got round to servicing the Sachs Orbit rear hub im using.

For those who are not familiar, its kinda a SA 3 speed but with a primitive uniglide cassette bolted to the other side. These came out for a couple of years around 89/90.

Strangely it now seems to have found favour again of late with the semi hybrid hub ( basically eliminating the front mech and gubbins and getting rid of those terrible, heavy, expensive, non weight saving, tea plate rear cogs of the last couple of years)......nothing new on this earth and we do love a bit of back peddling in the name of progress!

These are actually only 2 speed internal, with an approx 0.738 decrease in ratio. So if your running 46t on the single front ring, engaging the internals dumps that to 34t. They are direct drive and pretty bomb proof.....which is good because there are no spares!

As this is for off road " ish" trackie service im running 36t ring dumping down to 26t. The rear is 14-24.... so no massive hills.....glad i live somewhere flat now!

Actuation is just on / off. So any shifter will do.

The temptation to add a second set if downtube shifters has still not quite passed.....the idea being to have a triple up front and run full 36 gears! Plus it might look pretty cool.

The front wheel is far simpler. Standard fayre millard, both laced to mavic module rims.....which still need a good polish and true up.

In other news, ive resurrected a tange headset and the forks are in the frame.

Hopefully more building over the long weekend.

Have a good one everybody.

So....ive started to put it together. Front wheel polished up and in, rear wheel in, derailleur hanger checked for alignment, gear levers on derailleur on.

Then came the tricky bit. The sachs hub has what's essentially a 3 speed chain coming from the hub....this needs connecting to the left down tube shifter.

Problem is, the routing for the cables under the bb is for a standard front mech. It cant go through the guide as that goes right and the cable now needs to go left...see photo.

So its time to get creative. In the end i plumped for a p clip modified round a punch to hold a rubber tube and a length of cable outer. This was then bolted under the existing guide. The cable section moves, but as there is no fine adjustment needed (the hub is basically on /off) if matters not! It also keeps the existing guide intact incase i decide to do 3 x 6 x 2 and put a triple back on! 36 gears!

Now it just needs to stop.....which is probem as i dont have the required weinmann 750 calipers.....

Im working on the stopping problem.

But ive now got the rear mech on and ready to go......

Its getting close.

Tyres are schwalbe cx30 cyclocross tyres. They fit in the frame well with, plenty of grip and a bit of room for mud!

So after a bit of a push today its done. Last few bits and bobs sorted. Cables on, ready to roll.

Brakes worked after i filed them down a touch at the bottom of the brake pad eye. I was only 3mm off, so instead of buying longer drop 750 models.....in true trackie form...i " fixed" it.

Pedals came from my box of nos delights and are ideal for it....agricultural.....would be a good word.

I've had a little ride on it and its very comfortable, the only weird thing is you have to get your head round stopping peddling before you switch to low ratio.....its a bit like double de-clutching! (If you don't know what that is ask you dad.....or possibly grandad).

The final spec i will post below for those who are interested, its quite eclectic a mix!

As for my max £25 spend, 4 donor bikes later to get all the bits, and a lucky sale of the last of the accumulated left over stuff to a guy wanting to build a " hipster bike".......well im actually £165 up.....so bike is free......and its paid for my next weirdo project ( details later!).

Its been a really nice project to do; so often we talk about bikes conjuring up memories of youth and this one certainly did. Not because its something ive always lusted after, nor is it a unicorn, but it reminds me of and my much missed Grandad, in the 70s, in the shed, tea, messing about with a phillips or bsa for me to ride over the heath. Its also nice not to be thinking about catalogue specs, weights and frankly how the treatment of a frame is going to be received!

Here are some photos......looking forward to a bit of green laneing.

If your thing about doing one....just do it....its fantastic fun.
