Odd contraption of a photographic nature...

Interesting concept, a contraption that attaches to your flashgun and turns it into a ring flash.

There are a few ring flashes out there but few fit lenses as big as 77mm in diameter. Sunpak do one, but to save hundreds a chap at the office has tried this £60 quid jobbie.

Initial playing shows it's pretty good. You have to uprate the flash a bit, but it works like it should.

Clearly has attachment issues. And there's an oversight in that most portrait ring flash work will be done in the dark. And the camera can't use the flash's infra red focusing grid because there's a big bit of £60 plastic stuck in the way  , but apart from these somewhat critical issues, it's quite good. :D

Not pretty though huh?

Wondering if an array of cree LED's (or similar) could be rigged to fire instead of the flash . . could be made very unobtrusive..

there are less intrusive looking ones but they're costly. Not as costly as some equipment, was just interested to see if this one actually worked. And it pretty much did. :D

Not sure if LED's could match a flash gun for light output. Be good if they could as they'd presumably use a lot less power.

Flash's big advantage is the communication between gun and camera so as to expose perfectly. Have to say, not being the world's biggest Dig fan, it's one of the better digital evolutions - flash exposure control.

What sort of light output does the flash produce??

I don't know about how to measure it's light output or in what other than... it will send out a full flash with accurate coverage and exposure for 58metres on full power.

Should be achievable .. my single LED flashlight will project a decent light beam 200m easily..

But I imagine the logistics of linking an LED array to the flash shoe on a camera requires a little more in-depth knowledge. . .
