There are no rules on my builds, and most folk on here are the same. Avid Ultimate V-brakes on a frame from 1993?
Whatever works and I am happy with. Most of the really old stuff such as the stems I have owned since the early nineties and have hence been on many bikes... most of which are now broken.
I'm glad other people do the period correct stuff but it's not for me. 7spd XT was good, but 8spd XT works so much better, function over fashion for me (most of the time anyway).
