Northern Lights

So, Monday night. Laid in bed but didn't get a wink of sleep all night. Outside in the skies we had an amazing lightshow. Everyone was talking about it yesterday. Some of the photos I've seen are amazing. Missed the whole thing as I tried to sleep.

There was another huge solar eruption yesterday that will hit us later this afternoon and into the night- better than Monday so they say. Great I thought.

Sodding cloudy outside and no chance of it lifting. Monday night was cloud free. Double bastard.

So, did anyone see the lights on Monday?

It's been a decade or so since I last saw them despite driving out into the wilds and waiting on several occasions over the years. I'm starting to think I'll never see them.

I took the kids out between 8 and 9 to watch them, drove out of the city, pitch dark, crystal clear skies and nada. We did see the milky way though.

Sometimes, and it's usually to do with things like this, I hate living in the south in a city.

Yes, but not a great night for it as it was snowing off and on.

Kiruna, Sweden

Dude I know stayed up in Canada, got drunk and went outside the cabin and flopped on his back in the snow. Said the lights there were so bonkers, he thought his yag had been spiked with LSD.

They came out to get him and he was all "Nah, I'm warm enough, I'll be back in a minute, just want to see the lights".

They told him the grizzlies were eyeing him up.

Some pics were from corbridge Si, they looked stunning.

I'm in south lakes at minute, any sightings around here?

Nothing in the Flatlands. Last saw them this far south around 2004. Saw them properly back in 1990 when they were viisble as far south as northern italy.

not seen them here yet but had a whole year of watching them last year in Greenland last november i watched them for 4hr's as it was the biggers solar storm in Greenland for over 100years the whole sky was alight as far as you could see dancing across the heavens back and forth and its was -20/-30 out too 8) 8) 8)

never seen them - but high on the list of must-do's. Wife's 50th birthday in a few years and she really wants to see them. May not have to travel as far as we thought if the increase in solar activity takes place as predicted!

No sign of them last night 9PM ish when I was out on the bike (though I admit I was concentrating on keeping upright as it was pretty icy!) but did see them briefly on Sunday night.

A vibrant display is really worth staying out in the cold to watch, about ten years ago we had loads of fantastic bright displays night after night...
