Non-matching Hubs

For starters, more spokes on the back than the front is only good sense.

Frankly I don't care. I build bikes to ride, not look at.

I have this dilemma a middleburn rear that is lovely and a hope rs4 front. I don’t have them built up but I know that they’ll make a really nice wheel set although decades apart. A792405D-64C1-482B-901C-FF3104F9FE16.webp 334EAF09-F142-4FA5-8239-E92E0A51276F.webp

Hmmmm ... only one bike in the stable has matching hubs. Amongst around 15. Function before form. And it’s been that way with builds since the 90s. Best riding retro bike I had until recently....

Different rims.
Different hubs.
Sugino chainset.
Suntour front mech.
Shimano rear mech.
Etc

All selected since they were the best in breed.

For fun I once ran gripshift on the right and thumbie on the left.

Vive la difference!......

You can match the wheel set with the rims and spokes. It is like Marin did and other people have said. My team Issue comes with a WI front, that it is very nice hub and rear a XT but spokes and rims are the same and looks quite good to me, the wheel set is quite cool.

All my other bicycles has wheel sets like Mavic, Easton and Crank brothers so they match.

I find it’s important to not over-retain one’s arse.

However....I find that most retrobuilding retains one’s arse rather nicely....

A few companies specced different front hubs bitd.

For me personally, i used to ride a lot so went through rear hubs quite regular, as did others, so there were always lots of fronts floating around to use so never had matching hubs back in the day. And even now i have many fronts with no matching rears.

Obviously most are here to re-create and preserve retro bikes, their dream and once owned bikes, so aesthetically matching hubs on builds are more pleasing. Different coloured hubs for example can look out of place and distract the eye from the rest of the bike. On one of my builds i have a blue Hope Ti-glide and a black Pace, though the Pace does have blue end caps which tie it in nicely.

And did someone mention odd grips :)

The GT Avalanche with a GT branded front hub. The Scott with a Scott branded front hub.

Why oh why oh why.....not big.....not clever. I relaced them onto a front hub that matched the rear.

Colour - absolutely
Lacing - no so.
Reason.
bitd it was the norm, especially when sus forks starter making an appearance, to use a lighter front wheel at 32 spokes, paired with the 'stronger' 36 hole rear wheel.

That said, my first real flash build in 1998 was ti glide rear disc in red, paired to a black sport disc. Reason though was i had little money and got the front C2 on sport/XC front initially when building the bike, the rear ti glide came later(swopped for something else)
Frame was green(Clockwork slime green) stem was roox orange, brown bassano saddle bit of a mix really. But bitd that colour mix wasnt unusual.
