Retro Newbie
Hi, a year or so ago I bought a bike from a bike rescue scheme in York. It is a steel framed, 5spd road bike with 27in wheels, branded up as a New Hudson and has the frame number X4032 stamped on the rear dropout. I've not been able to find out much about these, or figure out an accurate age. I would imagine a lot of the components have been replaced - it has Weinman brakes (new Tektro levers) and wheels, I doubt it is the original paint colour and I've added a couple of new bits myself to suit me. If anyone knows any more about this bike or others like it I'd love to hear about it.

Re:

I am not familiar with the make but the frame looks quite old with the single shifter braze on and pump peg. Close up pictures of the lugs could help.

Re:

Thanks. I'll take some close ups, there are some nice details such as a braze on cable guide and an oil/grease port at the bottom bracket as well as the pump pegs.

Didn't the New Hudson brand become part of the Raleigh empire in the 50's or 60's? I remember them as a 'general' sort of bike with roadsters and 'sports' bikes in the range.

Re:

What little I have found so far leads me to believe it is late 1950s, I have no idea of what sort of level bike it might have been when it was released though. I'll add some pics when I'm not posting from my phone. Thank you for your interest.

Re:

Here are some detail pics of the frame. There is also a pic of the old Wrights leather saddle that was on the bike when I got it. The seat pin is marked up with ø26 which I presume is mm.

Re:

New Hudson were a fairly large bicycle manufacturer in Birmingham, they also produced motorcycles. I think they began in the late 1800s and closed in the 60s. I think your bike definitely looks 1950s. You can download the 50s catalogues from the National Cycle Museum which should give you a good chance of getting a model name.

Re:

A 26mm seatpost suggests that it will be plain gauge tubing so perhaps one of the lower end models; but don't let that worry you, it's a nice looking machine. I started off my retrobiking with an '80s base model Coventry Eagle and that was a super ride! And that colour is great, I have something similar in my mind for my Youngs rebuild.
