Is the seat stay brake guide any different to 1992? ...Because the serial number clearly indicates 1992 as build year.

Are you serious? The owner simply renewed it. Back then, it was super easy and super cheap to get replacement badges and decals from the suppliers. I still have some envelopes from Fat Chance, GT, Scott and Klein. Klein and/or Merlin even mention replacement decals in their price list sheets for dustributors for super low bucks. literally anyone could simply order them and apply them to their older bikes.

Frame sitting in the factory for 3 years before being built up was the only possible answer you came up with? You wouldnt make a good detective

Thanks. Mystery solved (although not much of one it seems!) Got the model sussed with some help from yourself and the folks here. Somewhere between '92-96 will do for me.

Assuming both the Ebay bike and @Dave Rider have the original forks, the Ebay bike is aheadset, whilst Dave's is threaded. May have a date stamp on the steerer tube visible if you take the forks out.
Dave's also has the rack mounts on the seatstays, the ebay bike doesn't.

Not as original...I thought about a 1 by 10 group set as I like the look, less to go wrong and I've you read you get as good a range as having a '3 by' set-up. Stay with Shimano. Some decent wheels, bank balance permitting. Would be nice to get some original decals, I've seen them online and looking the same as the originals. Oh, and a lot of polishing!
Not sure if folks on here prefer originality and I'm being sacrilegious but I think a mix of old and new is good.
