My Raleigh tip find.

You really don't see that many of the '89 Mirages around (I think this was the only year it existing like this), plenty of the Montage and the later purple 90/91 Mirage with 300LX, so quite a rare bike really. Will be nice to clean up and use.

i had a Raleigh record sprint myself, mine was all black, and a great bike. This is an impressive find, hope you get much enjoyment from it. I found a complete bike in my local stream the other day with a complete set of XT components on it, it is amazing what you can find!

And whats wrong with Raleigh?

How long have you got ?

Not a big fan, had 3 in the 80s. All awful. Think they got their act
together at the top end in the 90s.

So bad that you had 3 of them!! LOL!

The low end stuff was mass produced MTB's at budget prices back in the day, I never had one myself but fully respect the fact they may have been people's first MTB... we all had to start somewhere! :)

Be interesting to see it finished.

Would have loved a Mirage as my first MTB. I had to settle for a Maverick.

Cheers all for the interest.

A question, what sort of wheels should I be looking for that are not going to cost a packet and where to get a brake cable set from.

In no rush to buy just at moment, but if know of any wheels let me known.

Cheers Brian.

Wasn't much choice back then I'm talking EARLY 80s way before anyone had thought of mountain bikes (yes I'm that old).

Bit of an update. The plan at the moment is to put it all back together and get it rolling again as cheaply as possible use over winter and then next summer a full restoration job. So I have stripped the bike down, apart from the drive side BB, that is well and truly stick. I have tried every thing to get this out, time to think about cutting it out. Any thoughts how to go about this? Or just run it as it is but it needs new set of rubber seals, can get these?

The frame was never going to look great but its not that bad, I think I will touch up the worst bits with some enamel paint. Every thing else look great for it age and its apparent miss treatment, not much wear on the components either, so I guess its spent a lot of time knocking around is someone garage.

Does the drive side cup have two flats for a large spanner? I find that when this type cease if you use a bench vice as the spanner (put the flats in the jaws) and twist the bike around it they always come out.
