MTB super skinny slicks?

But presumably there's a reason for those channels and wotnot...

Anyone tried the Conti Gatorskin Ultra? A smidge narrower - and somewhat lighter that the Sport Contact.

I have Schwalbe City Jets on my 2011 Boardman HT Pro and to be honest, i think i hate them, they have been on for 2 months now, i mainly use the hardtail for work but i simply dont enjoy riding it anymore.

@85psi they are harsh on the bike (and my hoop), and fitting them has not given me any real increase in my 10 mile trip to work, because instead of jumping off kerbs, bombing down the side banks of bridlepaths and climbing up muddy hills, i now have to go the long way around, staying on the tarmac, riding around the housing estate rather then diving down the muddy trail beside the busy dual carriageway.

I have tried to use them off road and as you would expect, its not worth it LOL

They have taken the fun out of my commute for sure, they are boring, i have now started taking the retro 98 FSR into work so i can launch off kerbs and act like a hooligan (took it today for example)

I think i am going to remove them, i promised myself i would keep them for the summer and go back to my usual Conti Mountain King Mk2`s when the poor weather returns, but damn, they make my ride crap.

Yes they roll a lot faster, but i find i just freewheel more anyway.

IIRC they are 26 x 1.5

For the sort of riding you are talking about, there, I always recommend these as I've always found them a great blend of being able to cope with light off-road tracks reasonably well, yet roll quite well on-road. They corner OK, too - not outstanding in either situation, but a good compromise.

For years ive been looking for a set of pure slicks.Zero tread.
Knew someone years ago that had a set of 2" fatboys that looked like innertubes on the outside

Never seen another set :(

Im talking about 2 inches width. Not seen them since the late nineties :?

I needed some slicks the once... picked up some

vittoria randonneurs... (if spelled correctly!)

They were brilliant to be honest: never punctured, good rollers and with slight grooves too for that shower on the way home...

Excellent tyres, only bugger was they were really hard to get on/off the rims! Popeye impersonation at the ready I'm afraid!

Recommended though

Some skinny tyres are very difficult to get on/off, especially with "narrower" rims. As long as pressure is kept high, I'm not sure a lot to be gained by going below x 1.25 e.g. Maxxis Detonators. And tyre "quality" and weight probably as important as size - Ritchey "Tom Slicks" in x 1.4 are very good but I don't think still available.

If there is any noticeable wear on your rim then be careful pumping your tyres to 80+psi, the force of the tyre bead can push the top if the rim out, this has happened to a Mavic 231 of mine.

I ran 1.5 slicks but have actually moved to 1.95 slicks. It's a much more comfortable ride when it comes to rough Tarmac and the canal towpath. By the tell tale marks on the front tyre while riding I can see I am running on a very narrow section of the tyre, so they are still fast rolling. Super thin tyres are good as long as the roads are good.

I have these on my ss stumpy. Great tyres, especially at the price. Fast and good cornering on the road, and decent enough grip for hard pack off road.
