Before we get to the bike itself let me start with a little background on me and my love of BMX's. Before I joined the RAF I worked at a local bike shop (Cutmoore's Cycles, Rushden, N'thants) now sadly long closed down. It was a great way to learn how to build bikes, service them and also to sell them to the customer. The shop itself was well stocked with many branded names, Dawes, Elswick, Raleigh, but unfortunately lacked in the popular BMX brands from BITD. Luckily for me neighbouring local town (Wellingborough) had such a specialist shop 'Mike Jeff's BMX' from HARO, Mongoose, DP, Falcon, SE Racing & Redline it had loads of top branded bikes. Now over the years I owned several of these bikes and lusted over a lot more. Like all hobbies and interests as i grew my bikes were sold on to provide much needed money for Motorcycles and Drink and Girls
The tragic thing is I sold them for peanuts, practically giving them away. I did however always say I would have another one, yes even at the ripe old age of 43. Now sadly decent retro BMX's are fetching ££££ and as such wont be arriving in the man cave very soon, but a replica however well that's a different story.
Now to make a replica you must have the under pinnings, and with that I mean Frame & Forks. Newer BMX frames don't have the same geometry as the older classic's so it would have to be based on an 80's machine. With massive thanks to Bendycat for parting with this fine beast, behold my 1984 Viceroy BMX Frame & Forks.
Now the astute amongst you will by now already have worked out what BMX this Viceroy is going to be changed into? If not take a look at the Gusset, the Rear Stays, still unsure? Ok I will put you out of your misery, my aim is to create a replica Mongoose
Now it will not be an identical replica, there are slight differences, however with replica prism decals, a smattering of old school Dia-Compe MX 1000 Brakes in Anodised Red, Some Red Skyway Tuff 2's I think it will stand proud as a tribute to the mighty Supergoose of the 80's. Hopefully I will be able to create something like the fine examples in the piccy's.
It will be slow burner (Not Raleigh Burner lol
), but I've already ordered Headset, BB, One-Piece Crank and Chainring & Spider. The Wheels and Tyres will be the next purchase followed by the Brakeset, final parts will be Kashimax Aero Saddle and Mongoose Grips.
Finally I hope it doesn't upset the purists, It's a replica, homage to a bike that one day I may actually own, It's going to be a nostalgic trip for myself, and hopefully a few others along the way.
Enjoy
