Looks like they do several sole designs.........the one for clips / straps look smooth while the SPD type seem to have a more "trainer" type sole.

Tempted,look a bit like my Atalasport from the 70's

I spent some time looking at shoes on EBay but was unwilling to take the risk at the cost so in the end I bought a pair of Quoc Pham Fixed. They are leather and come in around the same price as other faux leather 'classic' shoes. The sizing seems to be pretty accurate. I normally take a 9, I bought a 9; they fitted. Might be worth a look.

Do they have enough of a sole to nail on a cleat?

Tbh I don't know. The sole is around 4 - 5mm thick and quite rigid, made of some sort of high density rubber. I got them from Bikeplus who advertise on the CTC; it might be worth giving them a call.

Update: I bought a pair of the Vittoria 1976 shoes.

The sizing is spot on and they are very comfortable. They have made riding with clips almost as comfortable as clipless ... a good buy.

Really pleased to hear that - I am really happy with mine but taste and fit is a very personal thing, so what's good for me could be rubbish for others, but it sounds as if the Vittoria shoes can be a good buy for lots of retro riders.

And I love the fact that I am back with lace-up shoes, too.

These (from eBay and a surprisingly good fit for my impossible feet) seem to be the originals of the Vittoria 1976s. It took me a long time to track them down but when I did they were wrong listed so a total bargain.
They are now in 'restored' condition. As received they a little desiccated!
