Modern(ish) shifting question

I have a twin ring setup on my Sonic, but alas i only own triple shifters :roll:
I've had a quick tinker to try and improve the shifting between the rings but its still very poor and tricky to stop things rubbing in all gears.
The question is; Should i persevere because it should work?
Or
Should i buy a double shifter?

They are nine speed Ultegra shifters operating similar age 105 mechs.

The ring spacing is the same between double and triple, so that's a bit of a puzzle.

I'm sure my principia had a triple Changer on a double front . Don't remember it being an issue.

Should work fine. Try setting it up using the 2nd (middle ring) to 3rd (outer ring) positions, rather than 1st to 2nd positions.
