merc versus vw, VANS advice please

Going by my VW experience - expensive and niggly annoying faults

yeah that's mine. Thanks for the free plug. I have the t4 and the vito. I guess you are wanting a comparison of the t5 and newer vito. I think the t5 is way over priced for a van. I don't find mercedes any more expensive than vw. In fact for commercial stuff they are cheaper. As the the t5/old vito, i find the t4 more robust and vanlike- that has its advantages and disadvantages. Vito is definately better to drive, handles better and is more comfortable and looks better.and it has a timing chain not belt. But, its not a vw! Sorry for lack of paragraphs- i'm on me phone and don't know how to do it!

John, seriously don't go with merc, they get the metal from recycled baked bean tins. I was following a 08 plate sprinter that had a small dent on the rear door, it had about 16" of rust around it.
Also, the driving position in sprinters/vitos is a bit odd, not the general dash area, but the accelerater pedal, on long journeys your foot is bent back along way, leaving you with a sore ankle :roll:
Oh, and the heating/blowers are shit too.
Do your self a favor and get a VW.

i always was leaning towards the vw, it was the autotrader thing showing loads of somilar but cheaper mercs that made me think.

just had a long look on the t4 forum, looked at the for sale section, there are some good vans very much like what i want and by comparison with what the dealer was saying they were much better priced.

i think that is the way i will go. buy it off a vw van obsessive! just got to save more money now!!

ex AA vans would meet your spec, with the rear seats etc....

and are supposed to be good vans and well looked after....

and of course they aren't white :shock:

I have a transit swb, low roof 110BHP, i got it brand new and have done 25k in the last year, its absolutey brilliant!
Our work has a mixture of VW's and transits, the transit is generally agreed to be the better van. Personally i find it's more spacious, more comfy, better driving position, loads more room in the back.
It's also faster and comes with a great stereo and ipod/mp3 interface as standard. Get the 6 speed version for great fuel economy

Downsides: the roofrack on mine makes the transported quieter to travel in and i'd like the purple dials that VW use.
