merc versus vw, VANS advice please

@ alan, wanted a colour so it looked a little more car than van, a mate used to have a t4 in dark green, looked cool.

VW 2.5 TDI thirsty old technology engine

look for VW 'PD' engines (Pump Duese) - fast and efficient - I get upto 65 mpg from my 8 year old 130 Passat

For £7000 your looking at a decent 02/03 T4 but not from the main dealer  my mate has just bought exactly what your looking for but a full camper for £8500 and its a spotless 03 with 40,000 on the clock :) so a combi for £7000 shouldn't be a problem :)

I like the Vito to drive but they do suffer really badly from rust :?

A few of my mates have bought T4s from this place and had good deals

I love my T4 camper and hardly use my car at all now :)

I get 40mpg on a run with a fully loaded camper which I'd hardly call thirsty and even if I drive like a tw*t around town I still can't get it to go below 30+

thanks for that link, some interesting stuff there. whats the score with the vr6 version, surely that is really crap on fuel/milage etc.

Pretty bad, low 20s :? I know two people with them and they've both converted them to LPG, lovely to drive but just too thirsty

Join the T4 forum there's always a few vans for sale on there and loads of advice at hand

I was looking for a camper/ van, and looked into VW

I'd heard bad things about vitos form other tradesmen... but I think the later new shape are ok :? but the earlier ones were rubbish from what I've been told

I ended up with a mazda bongo though  so not that helpful I'm afraid (except bongo's were about 2/3 price of a vw for similar year etc)

but in the bongo the diesels are normally 2.5 autos and I only get 30mpg on average, and by all accounts the 2.5 V6 petrol isn't a lot worse when you include the servicing and fuel cost difference (and the V6 sounds a lot nicer)

dont go with Merc , parts are so expensive .
had to buy a van last year , and went for a citroen relay . 1.9td . very fast , doesnt drink much .
it is an 02 reg , 70000 miles and paid £2500 .

We used to have a transporter very similar to the one in the photo (different rear door - no windows, single door), it used to be a coca cola maintenance vehicle, had 130ishk on the clock and never missed a bit. We only got rid of it when the clutch was getting smelly from towing a 2.5t trailer...... :? :D
