Mavic CPX 12 700c rims question.

Hello - I've a pair of Mavic CPX 12 700 rims. The original tyres that are on them are from a 1998 spec and are 700x25 but I wanted to get a pair of Panaracer 700x30 GravelKings - I don't think the frame will allow much wider tyres at the rear but will these Mavic rims be ok to run 700x30 just to get a bit more of an urban/trail path ride set up. Thanks

They are 14mm internal width. Officially you are good to 28mm according to Mavic. Unoffically you can go higher. I've run 32mm on MA40s which are just a tad narrower. Many here will have run wider than that on this width rims. Something trad shaped like a vittoria rando will pose no issue but a Gravelking has a bit more of a balloon profile. You won't really know until you try.

People didn't used to be bothered much by rim width vs tyre size until the advent of tubeless with low pressure.
In that case, the tyre rolls off the rim and loses the seal.

90s mtb rims were often 14mm running tyres 50mm - you just couldn't drop below 40psi.

14mm rim with a 30mm tyre going down technical descents with lots of bends…..not for for me thanks…..I value safety & personally 25mm is within the safe zone. It’s all about doing your own risk assessments before riding set ups things like this….

Thanks folks. The Vittoria Rando tyres look nice actually. I'll only be using this on mostly tarmac and a few tracks which are fairly flat I'll use inner tubes aswell. I've never stepped over to the tubeless dark side yet. I don't need to really. Good stuff. Will try share some pics of my build. Lemond Tourmalet a friend picked up from the tip and inevitably ended up in my shed
