Retro Newbie
Hi everyone. Just joined this site as ive just taken up cycling again and have just purchased a Marin Palisades 1990, I bike I hankered after as a kid but my parents couldn't afford ! im collecting another one next weekend and would love to strip them both down, clean, service and possibly respray and was wondering if anyone out there knows if the grey non scratch paint is availiable and if anyone does reproduction graphics for the marin. My plan is to do one as a palisades with the yellow forks stem handlebars and the other as an Eldridge with the orange colour forks etc and upgrade the parts and sell on the Exage parts and try and source a set of the wolber rims. Any help would be much appreciated! Sorry if this seems a bit cheeky as ive only just joined!!! :D

Re:

Hiya dude.

The zolatone 2000 grey is obsolete. fear not though as there are alternatives that are more convenient than tracking down a suitable copy, especially where texture is concerned.

Use the google search in top right corner for 'zolatone substitute advice' and suchlike. there are various threads based on your issue and should be useful.

personally, i would find a powdercoater that can 'near as damn it' match the grey tone, that's it really. decals will adhere better to that than the zolatones ever did. Some stonechip paint has that rough texture but, decal adhesion is gonna bug you. get decals here.....

[email protected] he's gil_m on this site. he will have those decals on file already.

then, either be care careful with decals or 2-pac clear lacquer over the top for peace of mind. sorted.
Same for the bars and stem, ask the coaters to do them as well. flouro colours come out better in powder than built up cellulose based stuff.

over and out. :)

This 'textured' bumper paint is pretty good.

A lot of amplifiers in the 1980's and 90's used a finish called Nextel which just loves flaking off and is so close to the Marin paint, I use the Hycote stuff for both

Thanks for the help everyone.Ill contact gil when I get a chance and will get some pictures of the bike up soon. Spoke to a neighbour last night who works at a car repair centre. Hes gonna take the frame to the sprayer to see if he can match yhe grey paint so fingers crossed !

Just a quick thanks to everyone for putting me in touch with Gil. Ordering some repro stickers this weekend. Had no joy with my neighbour as the bodyshop his friend works only deal with vw and no chance of matching anything so back to the drawing board !

Re:

Where are you based ?

The team issue is mine , in fact I just updated the thread.

If you are near SW London ( Twickenham ) you are welcome to come over and have a look at it and I'll show you how to get the finish , it's not hard :)

Hi

Im in Northampton so miles away! On a more positive note ive just picked up another Palisades in great condition for less than £55, and its just had a service so no need to strip down and paint, so just one frame to worry about ! I have some Exage 300LX parts that are surplus to requirement off the first bike so if anyone needs the correct period parts for a resto project get in touch. Thanks again for everyones help!
