I have a set of Vittoria Randonneur Trekking 700x35c tyres if they are of interest. New & unused. Having a bit of a clear out and the tyre pile could do with thinning out

They are good tyres and what I used on my Mercian for a long time. They handled all the off road that Brian puts on a road ride, so clearly decent

Update on my foray into shorter cranks. Just got back from a bit of gravel riding close to home on a bike I fitted 150mm cranks to. Amazeballs is my verdict, easier on the knees, encourages a spinny style and in the right gear climbs well whilst seated. I urge you to try it, especially if your getting older and weaker which alas I am :roll:

Meanwhile, stupid bottle cage bolt is still not budging, just spinning in the frame. Tried penetrating oil, pressure, leverage, heat, swearing... I've watched a few online guides, seems the answer may be to cut the bolt off and use a Dremel type thing to cut down the lip of the rivnut so it falls inside the tube, then fit a new rivnut.

And who doesn't like buying new cutting/grinding/noisy tools that make lots of sparks?!

I am still sure the 165 stronglites I had in my bike years ago were a lot nicer than 175 most people use.

The talk of wide tyres the other day reminded me of experiences in outback Australia where the wrong sort of tyre can be a fatal mistake.

Comments made by the early explorers stuck in my mind. So I dug into my library instead of fixing bikes. A good way to spend a few hours though.

One of these was Jerome J Murif* in 1897, who made his way from Adelaide to Darwin of a bicycle (about 2,000 miles before roads!).

This was his opinion:

Two-inch tyres should be used; inch and three quarter are too narrow. Mine ...(1 ¾")... were too heavy or dead for cycling over sand.

This was between Depot Well and Alice Well on the Hugh River, so pretty typical central Oz terrain.

I think we can take that as expert advice. Or at least I do, and probably Jamie too, because we've been through those sorts of places on 2 wheels.
