M900 vs M901 front derailleur differences

Howdy people.

I am sure that someone hereon can clarify my uncertainty about these above-specified units. Is my understanding that the M900 front mech was designed to be used with a standard 110mm spider bolt pattern, and the M901 with a micro-drive set-up correct? Also - can the M901 front mech be used with a 110 mm regular crankset arrangment, and vice-versa (M900 with micro-drive)?

Had to check the archive to see if my memory and/or gut instinct was correct, M901 is top pull, m900 bottom pull. From : http://www.retrobike.co.uk/gallery2/v/M ... 1.JPG.html I assume the intended chainring sizes are the same for both.

More to do with frame cable routing than chainring size.

Thanks people. Of course I know top pull vs bottom pull and their commensurate cable routing ... I just wasn't clued in that the 900/901 numbers designated a top pull vs bottom configuration.

Shimano did that for most of the front mechs back then even at the other levels.
They are identical otherwise, so much so that my original M901 mech actually had an M901 sticker put over the M900 stamping
