Look what I just found! Mountain Klein -80s?

Re:

Well we've been out at a bike sale at the local Uni all day so haven't had a chance to check it over but I'll be back in the workshop tomorrow eve and will give it a bit of a clean up and post up some more pics and I'll put a post in the what's it worth thread too.

It would be a lovely one to keep but ultimately if it would be better used to generate some money for the charity it would be madness not to sell it.

I'm hoping that everything is still working just a bit grubby as it seemed in reasonable condition at first glance this morning!

Re:

Breath held...

I'm a bit worried that this may end with it not being affordable, but you never know and if you don't ask etc!

Just for the record I would spruce it up with a full strip & clean/regrease - it is a present after all - any replacement parts it might need will be period or at the very least appropriate and it'll have an easy life of canals, disused railway lines etc.

In case you were worried about it's future!

Re:

get it up on ebay with some good pictures, a 7 or 10 day lisitng, ending at 8pm on a Sunday night, promote it here in the ebay section and it will find its level. I'm guessing a few hundred squid.

I'd agree with that. I suspect you'll find a few people willing to part with a few quid for that.

A proper Klein - before all the Mad Men nonsense! Fork looks intriguing - is it marked 'Klein' or 'Spinner' at the dropouts??

fork is marked with 'something' can't quite tell yet as needs bit more of a clean first....

I have been for a brief ride on it this evening and it's quite sprightly, certainly very light for a bike nearly 30 years old!

All parts in pretty good condition apart from front mech which is a bit baggy but if I can save it I will.
Bearings in BB, headset and hubs are all lovely and only the rear hub is even in need of a regrease.
Rear mech is a really nice Shimano (deer head jobbie) and is tight and more solid than a lot of modern ones are after 3 years let alone 30, same with the Suntour thumbies!

I will probably need to rebuild the wheels as although the hubs and rims are fine the spokes are very tarnished and corroded so would rather replace them.

The paintwork could be better, there are some areas of bubbling which is a shame but to be honest I think that kind of adds to the charm of it :-)

We've decided to do a proper strip, clean and rebuild/repair (with original parts) and keep it in the rolling museum for now, it's far too good of an educational piece really with great ahead-of-its-time features like internal cable routing, pressfit BB, big butted Alu tubes etc that it's going to stay with us for now.

If it ever does get put up for sale then I will make sure to give a heads up here first ;-)

This is a 1985 Mountain Klein, #74 built. First year had matching forks, internally routed rear derailleur cable through the chainstay, rear roller cam etc. Color is Sky Blue.

Yours looks like it's had most of the original parts replaced with lower end bits and pieces.

Very nice bike nevertheless.

Re:

Thanks for the clarification, can you share how you determined build number?

Still haven't had a chance to do much to this yet!
Cheers
