long steerer - to cut or not to cut?

Yes, it's a threaded, rigid fork. I can't swap the steerer and would have to buy some spacers but I'm not sure how well spacers work and whether they'll look shite, on a threaded headset and quill stem set-up.

it will look crap and they where never designed for it other than a hanger just cut it as they're rigid.
you'll also not get the front end to its proper position... 20mm lower ;-)

remember its to under the lip just below the top of the top nut. been there had to try cut it again bitd . so take an extra mm or two off what you think it should be, tend to allow tightening as well then..

Cutting the steerer is, as you say, "final", but it is the best means to your end.

Fitting spacers can work, I have about 10mm of spacers on the threaded forks on my Stumpjumper (partly due to me junking the steerer-mounted cable hanger), but it will all depend on how you like the stem, and whether you need the stem to go lower or not.

Try the spacers, if you're not 100% happy then just cut the damn steerer and be done with it :D
