No response from PWS finishing... tsk. .

BUT. .

Rang another local place (15 miles away) and they don't do any sand-blasting which is a pain..
However.. as long as I only want a 'normal' colour (to quote : not pink or anything like that  ) the cost of powdercoating is. . .

£20.

Yumm pink a fine colour for a growing lad

Bead blasting is far better. Sand blasting can go through a steel or ally frame faster than a hot knife through butter!

Bead blasting with plastic, glass or ground coconut shell etc does the same job but is FAR kinder on the metal. Of course, bead blasting with hard metal particles (dunno if this exists :)) would destroy your frame just as fast as sand...

i thought that, or i thought at least i would take some metal off
i didnt know it would go that far
as this is the case, why is it such a widespread practice?!

I reckon the tern sand blasting has become generic. Think of the damage sand paper can do a frame and then think of the speed and pressure of the sand...

There was a klein frame on ebay about a year ago and it had been bead blasted and painted and the top tube was all dented (only small ripples but enough to notice on ebay's listing page  The guy was selling because "it rides o.k. but it p....s me off" A warning to aluminium frame owners

I presumed bead blasting was better because they always seem to use it on American Hotrod type TV programmes.

I've got the fear about handing my aluminium frame in to the powdercoaters now.

I think that the natural shell blasting is o.k. and the plastic bead is o.k. but not sure about sand either as years ago  I worked in a glass factory in italy and we used sand blasting to remove areas of glass for quick engraving so if it takes off glass (and that is hard) it might make your aluminium frame a bit lighter  If unsure remove your own paint with stripper (not the female type  )
