Lightweight crankset that won't break the bank?

Weighed the Mightys, they come in at 650g probably the difference between compact and standard rings to the m900.
My Teenage Self, Middleburn is appealling, going on an Orange so made in England would be nice. I've just been looking at your Trek thread for some inspiration and there is a set on the scale at 559g
What model are they please?
It's a 93 Prestige and I'd like to keep it within a year or two if possible.
I suspect I need to wait a bit longer and up my budget!

I think the problem is that below 600g you start to make the usual light/strong/cheap paradox. Toplines being lighter are wibbly AND under-engineered as they crack. Short of swapping to titanium or carbon fibre you get stuck.

Don't forget the bottom bracket in all this game: titanium or at the very least UN70/71/72 with a hollow spindle is a big saving.

Re:

Hamster, I fully agree on the light/strong/cheap thing and having owned Toplines and Joystix in the past also agree on the flimsyness aspect. The Graftons in particular were beautiful but I worried every time I rode them because who wants to break that much cash? I think I'll probably stick with something forged just for piece of mind, maybe some Turbines or an RS7 even though they're a bit later, The added 50g or so is worth it I think.
BB will be a Ti one I think depends on what cranks I end up with.

Those are RS1, but I had a set of RS2 that were near as dammit the same weight.both were/are standard rings, so compact would save you a few grams. I'd be looking for RS7s for the forged aspect.

Look at Suntour Microdrive, XCPRO
http://www.bikepro.com/arch_products/cr ... crank.html 647g
no doubt drops the weight using Alu chainring bolts where possible.
and switching the granny out for an Alu ring (but you'll either need an MD compatible ring or modify a compact ring)
No doubt the XC Comp are a similar weight with the same ring.

As here they are Sugino made, so look for Ritchey, Specialised, White Industries etc for similar Sugino made arm.
Do not they use a longer than 107mm bottom bracket axle, only a bit... but every extra bit is more weight.

This may be the more important link (As bolts and rings can be changed) http://www.bikepro.com/products/cranks/crank_table.html
it has arm weight, unfortunately not for all of them so you'll need arm weights for Shimano and Suntour etc

Also you can run a Middleburn Duo double to save a bit more.

Joking apart, if you really want to save weight, go singlespeed. About 1.5 kg of unnecessary gadgetry goes back into the bits box. You also get fitter.

My Teenage Self, thanks, RS7s seem to be a good bet, that they are relatively unchanged to this day says a lot, the fact that RS1s became RS2s quite quickly says to me that they probably broke quite easily :D

I think over the course of this thread I've talked myself out of fully CNC'd cranks!

Fluffychicken, thanks for the info. If I go down the Sugino route I'll probably go with the Mighty 900s again, same weight as the XC Pro you mentioned with a more common inner ring BCD and scope to drop a few grams with alloy chainring bolts.

I'd not really thought about the added weight of a longer bb! I reckon I'm going to lookout for some RS7s or possibly some more early Turbine LPs like on my Bontrager, both forged and fit a 107mm axle, I think can live with an extra 50g or so for piece of mind!

Hamster, I have tried the single speed thing more than once, never lasts more than a few rides before I'm digging the dérailleurs back out of the box :D
