do they have to be V-brake levers?

or could canti ones do the job??

have to be v's unless you get some of the avid touring ones, which are designed to be used with road levers.

When I bought my BB7 for the front of my karakoram, the blurb says they work best with Avid levers.

Was using STI at the time, so the M739 shimano sti's had to do. The I bought some cheap avid levers for £15 new.

What a difference they made. More cable pulled and much more control.In short way better.

Maybe tehy are just good levers and with V's would also be good.

Both work but if canti's, you have to set them very precisely to avoid bottoming out against the bars.

Probably best stick to V levers then . . . . everything I do currently works on a wing and a prayer, precise is stretching my skills a bit far

Try and get some LX levers that have the twin pivots like this ...

.... then you can choose whichever setting is better. 10-second job to switch settings.
