Lazy Commuters

Someone mentioned the weather as well, now that's another thing that gets lazy, stupid people back in their cars. We choose to live in Britain which as we all know is a fairly wet country...people should use an umbrella or get some decent waterproofs and walk/cycle places!

It's not even that wet in the UK, especially as some areas are under drought orders now. I walk/ride every day (and going by those stats I'm in the top bracket for time spent commuting) but it's rarely that wet. And you're right about waterproofs - clothing is so cheap, places like Go Outdoors have seen to that. I'd even argue that walking to work was a safer option in the snow and ice during the last couple of winters, down here in the soft south it was cold, but not that cold.

I'm a happier, healthier person for not driving to work, just as I was happier & healthier for walking/riding to school as a kid.

Agreed with all that (from both of you).

When I was a kid, there was no other option, so it wasn't just a fair weather thing.

I think the point I was trying to make is that people, if pressed, would clearly find any excuse - especially if the option is there to them.

Like you, though, I feel happier and healthier because I'm fine with walking / cycling, and feel it was a good way to be brought up to be happy to do so.

I have to confess to indulging in commuting by car when the weather is bad.

I have all sorts of excuses for myself when I get up late and look out the window to a cold wet morning.

Really though, as my belly gets bigger and wallet gets lighter I'm only cheating myself.

Convenience is expensive in all sorts of ways!!

There's a very real chance I may secure a job on the other side of town after a year of unemployment. If I do, it is 2 miles ish, door to door, and if I go through town relatively flat. If I drive every day, the short journeys will kill the diesel or knacker the exhaust on the Supra.
I shall be interested to see what lies and half-truths/man maths I can use to convince myself to drive to work.

Or a half-hour walk, which will do you more good than a 5 minute freewheel through town.

Get the iPod on, and have a lovely stroll watching those around you sat in traffic getting more and more snarled up with each other.

Its a tiny Yorkshire town, there is no traffic to speak of. Unless the level crossing comes down, then it can be a 3 minute delay.
