Kona Kilauea (1996/19") - frame, forks and some other bits

tom.

Dirt Disciple
Probably the last old MTB thing that was at my parents' house - the pride and joy of my teenage years and now home-town "pub bike".

It's a 19", 1996 Kona Kilauea (the Columbus Cyber one). It was repaired by Argos about a decade ago when it snapped by the rear dropout - they sprayed the repair black, so it's not a perfect cover-up but it's not amazingly noticeable as the paint is fairly dark. Lots of chips and scratches, a bit of surface rust, but no dents. It has both the original seat collar and cable guide.

Comes with the original Project 2s, the original headset and the original stem. The seatpost (original) is bent (too many wheelies as a teenager) and is going in the recycling, but it's there if you want it.

Bars are 24" X-Lite flat bars. A surprisingly contemporary set of bars, considering they are 20 years or so old. Grips are Onza Porcipaws, but these will probably be cut off if the bars come off.

Brakes are XT vees - BL-M950s? Decent condition, not too much pivot slop, although the noodles are a bit rusty.

Wheels are basically original (Kona front hub, a Shimano Parallax hub on the rear, Mavic 221 rims) - I changed the rim on one of them, but used a NOS 221. Stickers are slightly different, but they're basically the correct rims for the bike. Currently shod with some slicks - Marathons, I think.

Cranks and BB are some cheap Octalink things as the tapers on the Curves were basically made of Dairylea. There is a single speed kit with tensioner on there too. Pedals are Primo Super Tenderizers, but I was planning to keep those unless someone is desperate for them.

Would there be any interest at around £250? If not I'll price it up to split.

It's in Solihull - happy to deliver it to Birmingham, Leamington, Warwick, Stratford-Upon-Avon or anywhere inbetween/a similar distance.

I've also got some 32" Orange baggies I'll throw in if anyone wants to complete the "17 year old Tom racing Bob's Bash" look.

OK, I'm now splitting this. I'll be on paternity leave from Monday for a couple of weeks, so I can potentially be flexible with when I can be in Stratford or Solihull. I vastly prefer cash on collection to posting, as that gives prospective purchasers a chance to check the condition before they hand over any cash - this bike was raced, crashed and worst of all commuted in London, and while I didn't neglect it, life has taken its toll.

As for pricing, a lot of people seem to have editted their ads to oblivion, so my prices are largely guessed. Feel free to make me an offer or tell me to jog on if I'm completely off the mark.

First up, the "chassis": frame, forks, headset (original), Velocity Stem (original - 120mm), collar and seat tube cable guide. As described - quite a bit of missing paint, some surface rust and a repair to the driveside dropout, but otherwise pretty decent with no dents and nothing bent (other than the seatpost, which can go with the frame or in the bin). A few MBUK stickers ("The Eternal Stench Of Damp Wool" on the steam, a Missy Giove one on the back of the seat tube, etc) but they'll come off easily if they're not for you. £150

M739 V-brakes and levers. Good condition, a few small marks and some slightly rubbed off graphics, but otherwise decent - limited pivot slop and pads/holders are good. Doesn't include any of the "moons". The noodles are rusty, but I can provide them and the concertina boots if you want. £50

The wheels - Kona front hub and QR, XT M739 Parallax and QR rear. Front wheel has the original Mavic 221 rim and the rear wheel is built up with a NOS Mavic 221. Lots of use, bearings could probably use a service. Still a solid, usable set of wheels though. £45

Bars - 24" X-Lite Xpert XC bars. Gun metal grey, faded where they've had decades of sun so the sections where they were clamped in the stem/had the brake levers are a bit darker. One of the few sensibly wide flat bars from the mid-nineties. No big or deep scratches, no bends. £15

If someone wants everything except the fork, yes, but I really wasn't planning on piecing it out to that degree.

If I decide to split the "chassis" I'll update this thread.
