Kona Hei Hei King Kahuna - 1997

Re:

It is indeed a Kona Hei Hei King Kahuna

The front mech arrived, the condition was good but the cage was bent, so I sorted that out with a wooden dowel and a rubber mallet  since it took me months to find the right mech, when another one came up, I bought that too.

I did my pre-build inventory and realised the only brake studs I had were M10 x 1.25 pitch. I have another pair of M10 x 1.0 from another frame but they were steel and looked a bit tired. I ordered a set of ti items from eBay and I'm pretty much good to go on the build as soon as I've made up my mind about the forks. I'd love a retro pair of forks but since I already have a pair of Fox forks it seems daft to buy some more.

Have you got the SN? The disc tab is a later addition, as I'm sure you know, along with the current decals (if it's a 97 model).

Just my opinion: these look best with M950 XTR and a massive dollop of Raceface, Syncros and the fork of choice, Z1 bombers. If I may be so bold, the kit you see on the Team Explosif, is what I think these look best with. They were - and are - race frames. Therefore, the raciest, highest performing, lightest kit really do them justice.

I prefer the look of polished XT over the grey XTR, plus XT is significantly cheaper and I had some M739 stuff stashed away already! The finishing kit is Ritchey WCS, Pro Carbon and Control Tech carbon bars. Like XT vs XTR it is cheaper and all pretty good kit. Z1 Bombers would be nice but I already had the Fox ones and I bet functionally they'd out perform the Marzocchi on any terrain. So in short, I reckon it'll be pretty good with what is hung on it

Oh, re the serial number, Pip dated it as 1997.
