Keeper?

Looks like it would make a reasonable single speed ;-)

Only thing really putting me off is the size issue, though you realise if its all on road it may be OK so long as you are comfortable and its safe. Personally I prefer bikes slightly undersize.

For me and a few of these guys, the list of bikes to buy and ones ya wanna ride is so long there's no room in the fleet for a true pub bike, though my daily is a bit unloved. I totally get it, leave it locked up don't be too emotional if it does get robbed. If ya like riding it, kewl.

While I agree there are better bargains to be had for the money, I've not seen anything better on here for £40 in a long time. Good, solid bike for hacking about on that - the tyres look like they would roll fast on the road if pumped up to ~60lbs, easy to single speed it you like... a quick afternoon's work (wash & basic service) and should be like new.

I'll offer him £30 and see what he says. It's not a desirable bike, but that's the point, I don't want something with too much thief appeal.

I'm sure I could find something more exciting for the money, but the chances are I'd need to spend money on it. If you need to buy tyres, chains, cassettes, bottom brackets, brake blocks etc. that £40 start price soon rises. I have inspected the bike and tried it out and it'll be ready to ride with £6.00 of new cable inners and a service.

Great point, I know my summer budget ride is doubling already, I can't do hacks no matter how much I try. You're totally right, its creditcrunchtastic use it as is for 3 weeks n its still cheaper than a bus pass!

It looks decent enough to me give it a clean and take it for a ride! :D

i know, i know!!!! i've been looking for a descent cheap bike for the last few weeks i tried to buy a £40 diamondback a couple of weeks ago and a gt barracuda!!! both were sold though.

If you wait around for ages and keep churning through gumtree and ebay you will eventually land yourself a much much nicer and cooler Marin or something for £40.

But you need to keep your eyes out all the time, plus when you do get it you will worry about locking it up, won't want to pull the stickers off it and will want to look after it.

The £30 hack bike has its place here, you don't care about it and can leave it locked without worrying about it. You won't bother replacing the chain until it starts slipping, where you can skip the bike and buy the next £30 bike. Like "bangernomics" for bikes :)

This Claud Butler is not quite a BSO so will be marginally nicer to ride but not so nice to ride and look at that you feel the need to look after it.....

Well, I have bought the Banana Yellow Claud Butler, I paid £30 in the end, which I think is pretty good for a whole bike, which just needs some new cables and a service.

The frame is a little large and wouldn't be any good off-road, but will be fine on-road, which is where this is going to be used.
