then again, not all that shocking. This thread reminds me of High School...I hated High School.

Guys, all of you should be aware that most message boards probably have some type of restricted membership area, the "Lounge" if you will, where those folks that see themselves as the cats tits of the group go to cuddle. I've been active on boards in the past where members who realized that such a restricted area existed and didn't open up the doors for them got all butt-hurt about it. I'm not blasting Rumpfy or anybody else on any boards where that may be the case, and Defiant isn't whining about it so much as asking where his blog traffic is coming from, based on the wacky web-trail it's left behind. Private Boards exist...it isn't just MTBR-VRC, it isn't a new concept, and it isn't going to go away just because you may have finally stumbled across it.

It's like this...special interest group starts a board, invites friends of like interests to join, board gains public exposure, thousands join and the original function of the board gets muddied...initial group says, "remember the good old days when all we talked about was blah blah blah", and the idea for a restricted area is born... It is a sad progression sure...but not out of the ordinary.

In the end, just remember that it's not like your wife and kids built a room on the back of the house, sit out there and won't let you in. It's just a message board or private blog or whatever. Even if all the recent conspiracy theories are true, and Rumpfy and Bushpig and whoever are actually sitting out on a private board rubbing each other with JPGs of Ritchey, Salsa and Potts frames, so what? The conspiracy theories about price fixing are nutty, mostly contrived by those that can't get in "the lounge" somewhere and feel the need to categorize the whole idea as evil. Let it go and move on.

I think thats one of the best, most level headed posts I've read on the subject yet. I'd make this post my forum sig if I could.

So, the shadowy but recently outed VRC price fixing cartel has relocated to a Hungarian mountain top lair. Very Bond villain-esqe

I found this recently, I think it explains a whole load of things (just check out the royal blood lines......)

Was this really needed? I'm not much good at fishing; it was merely an opinion of how threads like this stir certain memories. Your lengthy explanation is a bit of an obvious one. We all learned this lesson as we became adults.

Though, I'm sure it will earn you points, and you'll get in the club, err, forum for sure now

I think there are a good many people who don't understand that private groups exist out there, that they can't see for whatever reason. I bet a poll here on RB would've shown about 75% of members had no idea the possibility existed for John to start a private lounge that wouldn't show up on the general public's forum menu....

Fact is...this is the second thread here and the billionth over on MTBR speculating on the existence of a private group, so yeah, somebody had to say the 'obvious'.

Yeah right...when Rumpfy starts a private group dedicated to overweight overbuilt steel frames from Pennsylvania, kevlar saddles and Deore DX, I'll be right there begging...

lots of eye rolling there...where do I begin?

I don't think people are as naieve as you might think. Secret or private societies have been around for thousands of years. People are free to do this, well in most places at least.

Perhaps people are just expressing their distaste over some of the conflict of interest that take place when you are modding a public forum that requires objectivity, and a lack of favoritism, yet at the same time you are showing preferrential treatment to some members both in the public and private forums...private forums not being a problem, of course.

I have no interest in what goes on behind other peoples closed doors. I just think it's silly when those same people who have are behind their closed doors peek their heads out long enough to tease those they are not letting in...seems juvenile. Which takes me back to my point about high school. I apologize that I didn't find your statement to be all that profound, and yes, it is a bit obvious, but you're right, that's a matter of opinion...so I shouldn't state it as fact.

In regards to getting points and being in the club- that was me being stupid. You have cool bikes, and from your other posts, i don't see you as one to brown nose. The international vintage mountain bike forum sounds cool, so we now have a Retro international forum in Retrobike, and a Vintage international forum in the one mentioned above, so all we need now is a Classic international mtb forum, and that'll cover the VRC community :P

Good lord  , what is going on? Appears to be paranoia fuelled by a good deal of substance (?) - but that doesn't make it paranoia, does it?

Not wanting to add fuel to the fire via the oxygen of publicity (and then promptly doing so) but:

- you want to discuss a topic with like minded folk, sounds fun. I'd probably do it by e-mail although could clearly do it more dynamically via Facebook, Twitter etc. and can keep it as private as you like. But why go to the expense/trouble of establishing a website? To get people to 'aspire' to be invited to join?

- following the Deep Throat stuff at VRC recently, regardless of whether it had any foundation at all, how on earth could a private forum with 'secret' members not cause discussion? Apologies for being slow, but that's what you guys (and it is bound to be guys) want, hence the pot stirring. How droll. And I've gone and added to it. Oh.

- the idea of a secret members only club is diametrically opposed to what Retrobike is about. Put simply, it is about exclusivity v inclusivity. I can choose the latter but not the former. Thank goodness.

- as Woody Allen paraphrased "I'd never join a club that would have me as a member".

Happy days are a warm bike and a cold beer. We all share that interest. Can't we just love one another?

Ed (taking himself and the whole discussion far too seriously)

No you're not.

I invited you into the group originally, so that makes at least two members.

I might kick you out though if you start getting ideas above your station.

And it's supposed to be secret, so what are you doing blabbing about it on a public forum?

Consider this your first warning.
