I'm just as bad as most

but am trawling through my inbox looking at what I've bought recently and will be leaving some feedback

Just been 'Googling' security on Forum For Sale threads and noticed that there are some Forums asking for Telephone verification either by text or call BEFORE being able to post items for sale.

Seems like a good idea but may put people off posting up items for sale.

I think registering followed by a Mod confirming details may be the best bet. There are loads of sites that have the For Sale threads locked or not viewable until registered. Not too sure how hard it will be to setup as I am a registered member of 'Computer Idiots R Us'

i think you are onto a good idea but whats to stop a scammer using a free sim (readily available) and sticking a tenner credit on to register and look legit. what ever is implimented, the trustworthy people will follow the rules, the scammers will work round them.

how about if you are unsure of someone make arrangements to collect the bike or bits in person - ask for an address or telephone number. you then have details that are probably real. then if you pay with paypal and the stuff doesnt appear you have the persons address. not perfect i know but it could help.

something else to think about is networking. for instance i know awkwardkid, pickle, mikef350, longun, sjhg2009 personally. could it be possible to group people together. if you bought something off pickle and you couldnt get hold of him you could ask me to give him a call or pop and see him or whatever. obviously not suggesting that would be necessary with pickle but you get me

Just trying and make things a bit more difficult. I know at the point of registering you can make it up BUT it will no doubt make people think a bit before trying to scam.

In the extreme you could always take a pic of a current utility bill with your address on and send it to a MOD. Now that is extreme I know. Personally I wouldn't buy anything costing over £200 without speaking to the seller on the phone.

Locking the 'For Sale' thread until registered may be a good deterrent, worth a go even if it stops just one scammer getting on here.

The problem with networking is it will only work with those that have a passion for Retro. Some of the best and most sought after items come on this site from those just trying to get rid of 'an old bike' THEY are not OCD about it and once the item is sold they will never be seen again.

The only thing I'd question by putting such things in place is 'Would it stop ME from joining?'

New members bring new ideas and a new stockpile (hopefully  ) of parts. Would it make the Site exclusive and not very user friendly OR would it give a better Safety Net for when things go wrong.

Quite a few other cycle related sites are saying a big NO to Paypal Gift at the moment. Is this the way forward to offer better protection? Don't know, what do others think? Personally I would hate to have to pay Paypal or other Fees, look at the way eBay has been destroyed by Fees over the last few years

Obviously I would have no problem paying by the 'gift' option to those members with excellent feedback or are known to me. But I always think it's a calculated risk especially when buying parts from the other side of the world, etc.

Depends how far you're willing to go for THAT part AND what risk you'll take.

i guess at the end of the day there isnt a huge amount the site can do, given a scammer will find a way to scam, we just need to be far more careful ourselves.

i know i tend to be far too trusting but as yet i have not bought anything really expensive.

i think you are right that we dont want to put off those coming here to sell their stuff. even though then are not part of the community theyt are fueling the community which can only be a good thing.
99% of people are honest and good. maybe not quite 99%!!

Maybe could put 'varified' or something by the users avatar once people have given contact details.

Good idea. I would have no problem sending details or speaking to someone on the phone to get this 'vErified' ( ) under my name.

Would give people more security seeing an item being sold by a 'verified' member. But would mean a hell of a lot of work for a Mod or two. Totally voluntary, not having it wont mean you can't sell BUT by having it it makes you a more trusted seller.

JOHN what do you think??????

A lot of sites offer a premium member option for a nominal yearly fee that entitles them to additional site content , usually the for sale sections and sometimes "adult" only rooms .

The benefit being a source of revenue for the site to cover hosting costs , events etc and the fact someone is less likely to turn up and screw people over if they are having to pay to trade .

Sadly drawbacks include an added sense of " us and them " between those that pay and those that choose not to and of course the additional administration effort .

I suggest that we find mazdaman/dbl and nail him upside down to a barn door by his bollox.
Take a pic and post in the for sale section to deter the scammers

I've thought about this for a while and cant draw any conclusions as to why somebody would ask for loads of donated parts then make up stories afterwards.
