Really? I've not noticed that as a problem with my Karakoram Elite. It does quite a lot of miles in all conditions and the back brake cable is very smooth even with zero maintenance.
mainly gears caused the problems.

Internal routing is back, as on my latest purchase carbon framed specialized 29.

There were both inner and outer cable versions as well as end stops or tube in the frame tube The outer cable inside a tube was prone to seizing.

Inner in a non tube can be bugger to get in, best attach a wire when removing the cable otherwise it can be many minutes of prodding with bits of wire, spokes etc.

Re:

A handy tip when trying to fit a cable in any internal routing set up, is to tape a length of fine string to the end of the new inner.
Stuff the string into the frame tube and use a vacuum cleaner to suck the string out of the appropriate hole. Pull the string through complete
with inner and then fit the new outer over the inner, the inner now becomes the guide when inserting the outer into the frame
