Im off to San Fran, well almost....

The Blazing Saddles bikes are junk, and the maps are pretty poor also. The riders are primarily tourists who take them on a gentle road ride of about fifteen miles across the Golden Gate Bridge and then ride the ferry back to San Francisco. I often find groups of them on bikes with the distinctive handlebar bag, lost at a crucial juncture because of the stupid maps.

There are shops in Marin where you can rent a good FS bike and already be close to the trails. Find one and follow somebody.

Give me a shout when you get here and we'll take a lap down Repack Together. There are two Bike shops in Fairfax (near the bottom of Repack) that rent bikes-Sunshine Bikes and Fairfax Cyclery, and you can rent a quality bike from them! Pat

If you go down to the pier check the wind direction, the seals on the platforms look nice but man they stink

I know that's true, but if you're a British tourist only in SF for 2 days then a pleasant ride across the bridge from Fisherman's Wharf and back on the ferry is a good experience. Is there a good bike hire place near the Wharf so that you can take a bit longer and get the best of both worlds?

All those bike hire companies near the waterfront in S.F. are pretty much the same. To get a capable MTB you need to go to a regular bike shop for a rental. If you just want to ride the road to Marin and back, they are OK, I suppose. I was on a ride on Mt. Tam last summer and I met these 3 guys from the UK on a road ride over the mountain. They were BA aircrew and they were riding really nice carbon road bikes they rented from a bike shop in the City that BA has a contract with. Here in Marin we have a number of shops that can rent you a high quality full sus MTB or road bike.
