I'm going to harm the next person I see...

It's nothing like throwing something away, though, is it? It's all reversible with a little effort. The frame still exists.

It's moot in my case, though, 'cos I've got one and don't need another one :)

I dont geddit...

poncy students playing bike polo? even if that judgment is true, its a lifestyle choice...that still involves the object we all love. BIKES!

For me, slamming single speeders is a form of elitism in itself. Whatever anyone says it is a pure version of cycling.
Its like an F1 fan slamming a TC or Indy Car fan - different discipline, same love of a sport/lifesyle.
I dont love SS bikes, I dont even own one, but I occasionally find the idea appealing.

Quite a few ss'rs flew past me on the London 2 Brighton this year, and I wasnt exactly dragging my heels... thats hardcore fitness in my book.
I found myself thinking '' It would be great to be fit enough to ride like that ''

Are SS bikes really a fashion statement? Time will probably tell, but I suspect it could just be like that enthusiastic chap suggested on BBC4 the other night - Cycling is back. Its bigger and better and never been more popular.
Thats a win win situation all round.

You are right on several counts but would you also say that battery powered bikes are good when they are mostly bought by fat people who have been advised to cycle to lose weight    (after several months they return to their doctors with no visible improvement and wonder why  )I live in the obesity capital of britain  (not neccesarily scotland  ) and know this to be fact  :lol:So not all cyclists fit in the "lifestyle" bracket some can be seen chainsmoking while pushing their motor buttons  and still call themselves cyclists  I have nothing against ss really I just like controversy :wink:I just find it a bit lazy to build with no gears and quite shocking that some manufacturers can charge the same or more for a basic ss when you can buy a respectable whole bike for the same or less thats all  Also I will not be sucked in by marketing crap and mumbo jumbo  I rode the other week with a guy on a single speed and he pretty much kept up with us all the way so if you get it right then 8) I suppose :?

at least youre honest!

The fat electric owners are another topic though, and way of subject.
Im a lard ass myself, but when I ride more the weight drops off.
My mates mum is a proper chubby checker lard ball, and apparently every diet on the planet and form of exercise known to man, including cycling at a snails pace, is not enough to prevent her cake eating from piling on the pounds.
It must be her gene's....

Youre right about the marketing jumbo though, but still, money makes the world go round. And for every 10 over priced SS bikes sold (that will sit in a corner and gather dust only to be snapped up by canny cyclist several years later for a mere fraction of their original value) , there is one person whom is bitten by the bug and becomes a cyclist for life.

I commute to work on a SS (42/16 gear). 34 mile round trip. It certainly gets you fit quickly and also improves the way you ride on a geared bike.
