I'm going to harm the next person I see...

if you want a single speed/fixie don't ruin a perfectly good and usable road frame, buy and old track bike . . . or a new one.

Agreed!

Bricklane bikes, epicentre of the trendy east london fixie/ss scene is guilty of many such heinous crimes!

To the point where they have ground the hangers off some classic steel frames, just so a poncy student can play polo on it.

You pay a premium for a track frame, new or used. Track frames are great for track use, but the short wheelbase, tight clearances, steep angles, and round fork blades of a classic track frame don't make any sense on the road. Nice old road frames are ten a penny.

Yawn. The backlash is soooo passé.

I really like the relatively hassle-free singlespeed ride and the cleaner lines of the bike.. nowt to do with saving weight..

But I'm building a 1 x 9 too..

And I quite like the idea of hub gears so may look into that next year if I'm still about ;)

It is a bit of a buzz-word though.. that and fixie . .

and retro kult

I'm safe I'm currently using mine as a 1x3, still have all the mech and cogs, shifters cables there to make the bike look right.

The last person I saw did harm me , just had a wisdom tooth pulled . You should see the size of the hole it left behind and the size of the tooth that used to occupy it . Elephants have been shot for less ivory

I don't care about the weight , I estimate my bike to be roughly 22lbs and there are much lighter fully geared bikes around , what does it for me is the fact that I can stamp on the pedals and nothing will snap , skip or jump , all the power goes directly to the rear wheel . I ride my bike , not operate it .

I also remember LGF proudly showing a tensioner he bodged from an old cantibrake that he mounted on the gear hanger :?

Methinks he doth protest too much......
