ID req'd for Campag Front Mech

Old Ned

Old School Grand Master
I've recently acquired this front mech (well, actually a load of bits in which was the body and several cages) and can't identify the model. It's obviously a Record (later model looking at the 'bosses' etc.) but it is a strange 'Graphite and Silver' finish (NB - the cage is not necessarily the right one) which no-one I've shown it to can recognise. Even the original owner can't remember where he got it from. The Graphite seems to be anodizing as it will scratch to reveal natural alloy beneath.

Can anyone here assist?

An idea of date would be useful as well.

Might be a mod-1960s Gran Sport.

Thanks for the suggestion Steve. All the bodies of the mechs around this period seem to be very similar and I've looked at the various catalogues etc. on CampyOldy website, none of them show a dark coloured body although a later SR front mech did have black cage arms.

I've e-mailed the photo to the CampyOldy webmaster to ask if he knows what it is.

It could just be corrosion - exposure to salt makes aluminium mechs cloud over like a damp August day...

There's to much of it. It's consistent over the whole body, inside and out, and the clamp is a different colour again.

After all the mystery etc. above I might have discovered the truth. I went to see the original owner this afternoon and mentioned this. He thought for a moment and then said he knew what it was. Some time ago he needed the cage re-chroming and the whole mech went for sand-blasting (why he didn't send just the cage I didn't ask!) and he thinks that the 'graphite' colour is the result. However, this still doesn't really explain the 'silver' finish on the clamp. Are they a different alloy?

If the story is true then it's a bit disappointing, I was hoping I'd found some real Campag rarity worth a small fortune to some collector in Japan!
