Its not tear gas, nice try though.

"Tear gas, formally known as a lachrymatory agent or lachrymator (from lacrima meaning "a tear" in Latin), is a non-lethal chemical weapon that stimulates the corneal nerves in the eyes to cause tears, pain, and even blindness."

"Pepper spray, also known as OC spray (from "Oleoresin Capsicum"), OC gas, and capsicum spray, is a lachrymatory agent (a chemical compound that irritates the eyes to cause tears, pain, and even temporary blindness)"[/i]

Nice try though

A) they weren't police
B) my children wouldn't be allowed anywhere near a protest whilst we are living in a democratic country, don't like something? don't vote for them.
C)Suspended not sacked, enough said really! just shows everyone agrees with what they did, but that they have to make it look like they care about the fact some nyaffs got a face full of pepper spray. Suspension is a great way to give a member of staff a holiday as a reward for actions which you agree with but can't be seen to support publicly.

Their wealth gives them limitless options other than street protest, so no i have zero sympathy...they are in a position through their parents/social standing to make a real impact on policy/politics without sitting around like a bunch of dossers 'occupying' places. These kids don't know what they stand for because they don't stand for anything, its laughable.

"My children wouldn't be allowed?"
What planet are you on? These are all people over 18 who've left home. This is like Victorian Dad out of Viz FFS. And that goes for you too Technodup.

"They don't stand for anything".
Generalisation on en epic scale there.

Sorry - not read so much tosh in here since a former member who shall remain nameless was writing his inane ramblings - in fact he made more sense than this. GoldenEra made you a massive complement by referring to what you wrote as "rhetoric".

Or maybe it's because they have "the tools that capitalism provided them". What, an i-phone?! I have an i-phone, and i am proper skint. Got it free with my contract.

You don't get iPhones free. Or any other consumer product for that matter. As you alluded to in the very same sentence. The fact you are skint is neither here nor there, you wouldn't have desirable iPhone type products without capitalism.

Whether or not you think it's a reflection on the protesters is another thing altogether.

I can't answer for anyone else but if I was in any way funding their higher education you can bet that I would take a keen interest in their activities. And that would preclude them from wasting their time on 'protests' such as this.

Protest is fine. But a bit of pragmatism wouldn't go amiss here.

You don't fight wars you don't think you can win. And if they think they can effect any substantive change they're deluding themselves.

Somehow I don't think that's really the point.

We've had 20 years when "the yoof" has been pretty apathetic. Now it's come back full circle to the late 60s when everything was also "a bit vague".

This generation has had it very good up to now and has been woken up with a start. Like the hippy generation. Which was also universally despised by everyone.

What I do find it hard to get my head around is that there are so many grumpy old men getting their pants in a twist about young peoples idealistic mistakes. Still - it proves there still is a generation gap and IMHO that's a good thing. I was worried it might be gone for good.

I don't know if 33 is old but that's the point, idealistic mistakes. Well intentioned but ultimately futile imo.

To succeed they need the public onside, but rather than truly reach out to them they disparage the mainstream as sheeple; brainwashed etc. By definition they can't get the power brokers or super rich onside and if they continue to alienate the man in the street what chance have they got?

None. Which is why I don't see it as a fight worth fighting.

Nobody thinks everything is perfect but progress is slow and incremental. To expect to change world systems, markets and governments by sleeping in a shanty town in daft.

Well they are young folks, that is a fair excuse.

I wonder how old you are yourself?

Surely old enough to know people generally don't get dismissed without first being suspended pending an investigation into their actions.

Tear gas is far stronger, thats why they wear gas masks when using it, that was being used by a campus security gaurd not a police man...it wasn't tear gas.
