How far is your commute?

Mine's just 6 miles each way, but at least half of the way there is uphill. I tend to prefer using my road bike (much more fun bombing down the hill on the way home with than a 26" wheel MTB), but have in times of need relied on my suspension-less Koga-Miyata Terrarunner to do the job as well. And yes, being able to shower and change at work helps immensely!

I drive between 50 and 250 miles a day so my commute is to the end of the drive (about two car lengths), I do it on a micro bicycle to make it worth my while.

FWIW, my commuter is a 1989 Bridgestone hybrid, seven speed with a North Road bar and mudguards, frame bag and front basket/rack. It's nice to be able to carry everything on the bike and not on you.

I work from home and my desk is 3ft from my bed. So my daily commute is about 6ft total.

Once every week I need to go to the office though, and then it's a 9 mile trip each way over flat roads and through city traffic. Perfect for an MTB on slicks.
However the backpack with laptop is too sweaty, so I usually end up taking the bus instead.

Re:

Between 30 and 60 feet, depending on whether I go via the coffee machine in the kitchen from my bed to my desk. Stairs are involved, so I walk it. :P

Mine is 26 miles per day, from just north of Croydon to Stoke Newington in north London. All quite flat apart from a bugger of a hill within the first two miles which I have to grind up in near bottom gear to avoid being too knackered for the remaining 11 miles and an 8.5 hour day on my feet at work.

I ride a battered Time Elite carbon, 10x2 with a 46/34 and an 11-28, tho I never use the smaller end of the cassette. At my age (53) I can't push big gears and the 46 ring is plenty big enough. A decent Cree headlamp and Moon rear lamp and RaceBlades complete the package.

I keep a change of clothes at work, and a towel. No shower, so I use baby wipes to freshen up. Not ideal, but it's the best I can do.

Re:

14miles each way but not everyday, was on a 2007 Kona Kula with rigid forks & 26 x 1.75 touring tyres but then I thought a 29er would be a good plan but so far not convinced & mudguards have proved to be a pain.... quite tempted to go for a Specialized Awol as I like the idea of a disc braked road bike with fat tyres to soften the blows given off by the dodgy back roads that make up most of my commute.

Nothing beats a morning ride to work when you've time enough to take the off road route :)

I used to do almost bang on 18 miles each way for about a year.
It's all about preparation, food and not carrying a bloody rucksack.

Leave as much as you physically can in the office. All i carried was shirt, kecks and food.
Everything else stayed in a locker at work.
Take it easy on the way in, warm down for the last couple of miles so that you aren't still sweating when you get out of the shower.
Give it beans on the way home. (If fitness allows)
Have a snack an hour or so before you leave.

And keep the bike in tip top condition. Having a mechanical at the halfway point of a 5 mile commute is a pain. 18 miles, it's a frigging nightmare.

also..check your tyres an hour before you go home{ do the tube change in works time if possible  }..after a 12 hour night shift getting to your bike and finding you have a flat  .. so always have spare tubes and if possible a track pump

Ernie

Used to be 3.5 miles so would do it 3 times a week all year round.

Recently changed jobs so is 9 miles with a couple of big hills, aim to so that 2 or 34 times per week once days are warmer and longer.

Distance is one way so double for total.

Anything over 1/2 hour in winter gets difficult due to cold.
