How far/fast do you ride?

Im still very unfit it seems.

So far I've managed a max of 12 miles at an average of 10.6mph. Mostly XC consisting of loose gravel and the single track. Nothing too difficult though.

You guys have been doing this far longer, so how do I stack up, what should I aim for?

I'm 91.4kg and dropping, slowly :/ I also smoke but trying to quit currently.

I only recently got back in to the sport.
I started at 5 miles around the park, progressed to 7 or 8 miles around Rivington and have gradually just been pushing myself to go further and further at my own pace.

I'm currently doing about 18 miles around Delamere and aiming for at least 20 next time.... I only really get chance to get out on a Saturday, but this week I saw an opportunity to head out on the roads last night and racked up another 14 miles.

I'm stuck at 16 stone in weight.... 101kg... But the wife has noticed I've toned up a bit muscle wise.

As a teenager I would cover 30+ miles at weekend, but then I didn't drink or anything.

It'll come with time.

Oh and as far as fast is concerned... I vary my pace... Covered 7 miles in 35 mins on Saturday before slowing for the remainder of the ride. I'm not in a rush to get anywhere as half the joy of cycling to me is to enjoy the countryside.

Varies a lot

Usually do the 10-11 mile ride to work in 35-40 mins but happy to go out at the weekend and do 25 to 30 milers but not quite as fast!

Not as far as I used to, and not as fast as I used to

In the 90's I used to race. I could ride all day and not bat an eyelid. Sub 1hr 25 mile TT's and week in week out MTB races.

Then I took 8 - 9 years out.

When I joined the forum, I started riding 2 -3 then 4 times a week and got quite fit again. But, with starting my own business in January, and a busy family life I only ride now maybe once every other week.

It'll get back on track soon, so I'm not worried. At the end of the day I'm not racing and my riding is just about fun, enjoying the bikes and enjoying the views.

I still like to race but I think the older you get the more you have to work/train to keep in it which I'm not prepared to do. I can usually place in the top half or third of most races without much training apart from commuting but'training' i.e using rollers and going out on roads would bore the f**k out of me lol

not very and not very!

dont really time my rides to be honest but like to think i average min 10mph off road.

an evening ride for me is usually 15 miles. weekends 20-25 but happy to go longer just not fast!]

bimble is a word i enjoy

Part of the problem for me is finding routes which are long enough to really work hard on. Short of going around in circles on the same old routes its proving difficult and a bit boring.

I think I'm capable of 15 miles or perhaps even more but I hate riding on the road! On only my third ride out, a guy sprayed fizzy pop at me from inside a car...grr. I did get my revenge for cyclists though ;)

Is there any reliable way of measuring calories burned during a ride?

If I knew that, I could perhaps tailor my diet to burn more calories than I take in, and hopefully slim down.

Agree with road riding...I'd rather do nothing than ride on the road, always try and avoid it as much as possible!

do you live in yorkshire? there's plenty of off road to be had. have you got an os map of your local area? if not buy one and highlight sll the tracks and you'll be amazed by what you find. i certainly was in my area

Hi lewis.

I do indeed. There are lots of paths but a fair ways north of me. All the paths I can find on the OS maps that actually go anywhere start a few miles from me. I know what you mean though about finding hidden paths in estates etc.

I've spent an hour today browsing OS maps of the local area online. Lucky enough to have a sub to the digital OS service.

If anyone wants a map, give me a nod and I'll try, but keep it mum ;)
