Hi all,

As the title says, how easy are these to obtain? Does much 1" ahead kit for mountain bikes with 1" requirements turn turn up often and at what sort of prices?

Trying to weigh up the pro's and con's of building an old frame up, IE is it feasable and worth the expense?

I would prefer something along the Thomson Stem route 1" ahead with no adaptors, or at least a stem for which I can find a matching brand 29.4 seat pin?

Prefered forks would probably have to be Judy SL for V brake, no disc tabs, but are there any modern forks available in 1" ahead?

Or at least a 1" Judy crown and steerer and a yellow Judy bolt on arch without a cable guide.

Only really looking for price and availability guidlines at the moment though.

Ta,
Steve

Syncros 1" stems come up quite often in the 20 to 30 euro ballpark NOS, and of course there are always matching posts on the market. I'm not sure if that's what you meant, but Thomson stems are all 1 1/8", though they come with adapter shims for 1".

For headsets, most road stuff is fine for mtb use. Campag Record and Chorus are both very nice, and Stronglight make a few that work well too. The Record unit even has greaseports. Figure 15 - 25 quid for a Chorus or O-light on eBay, more for Record.

My '92 Stumpjumper has a Syncros post and Cattlehead 1" stem (on a Sycip fork) with a Record 1" A-headset.

Marzocchi and Pace have been making 1" forks in the recent past. That may still be the case, but I'm not a suspension user, so I'll pass on that part.

If you are not keeping it 100% retro FSA do 1" A-headsets available new from Chainreactioncycles, around £20 i as i recall.

The Syncros stem one_eyed_jim mentioned is what i used on my Clockwork, paid £30 for it off E-bay and that was boxed and brand new.

I placed a wanted add on this site for 1" steerer forks and soon got a NOS pair of Tange switchblades.

The stuff is out there just not as easy to find as 1.1/8"

BTW if a set of threaded steerer forks turns up these can be used with an A-head set and stem as long as the steerer is long enough, threaded portion can be cut off, this is what i did with my Switchblades.

the problem with these 1in pace and marzocchi forks is that they're too long for the vast majority of frames with 1in headtubes...

All Pace forks pre 2000 have bolt-in steerers so can be fitted with a 1" job with the appropriate reducer shim. Generally the older they are the shorter they are so you should be able to find one to suit an older frame :D
