Thinking of making a wooden workbench. Is there an optimum height for the table if you want to have a vice on it etc. Or is it down to personal preference. Thanks.

Re:

Your kitchen table if you have one will be a standard height, so if you stand next to it and do some virtual woodwork that should give an idea what is comfortable. If you are going to plane wood the vice height is important.

the general rule is to have the jaws of your vice at elbow height, but that's aimed for people using the vice a lot and then is dictated by the height of the vice.

Re:

As above. Top of the jaws at roughly elbow height. It allows you to stand comfortably, is better for neck and back and very importantly helps you file things flat. Too high or low and you have to put way more effort into controlling a file so you dont get unwanted rounding of surfaces. True that it is more important if you work 8hrs at the vice but tbh it is worth it even for 10mins.

Re:

I carefully selected the height of mine to be EXACTLY 1/4 the length of the big bit of timber i had. And funnily enough the length and width I decided on matched perfectly with the offcut of thick marine ply I had leaning in the shed.
The technique is not everyones cup of tea.

Standard ergonomic height is usually no higher than 36” (915mm) but if you google ergonomic workbench heights you’ll get loads of advise about elbow etc etc if you want to build something exactly tailored to you.

It rather depends on your height!

A good place to start is looking at your kitchen worktop. Its probably about 900mm high.

Try working on that a bit......probably best whilst Doris is out......infact, why not bake some tyres at the same time.
