holy moley rear sprockets bigger than the front now

My point was that you don't actually need that low a gear because you're going at walking pace so might as well get off and walk. It's not about the perceived kudos, it's about whether a silly low gear achieves anything. Yes were not all Hinault with super strong legs from the 'roids but equally were not all Lance with super spinny 130rpm legs from the EPO ;)

What the silly low gear achieves (assuming its on an MTB/Gravel/ adventure bike) is stops you getting off the bike on a steep fire road climb for example. Whether or not it is slower than walking is irrelevant really - remember too that on an MTB in the granny ring, you can ride things that you couldn't walk.

As is said, its horses for courses - its not for a road bike!

This is the road section but granted, I did post a picture of an MTB :)

That's the point I was making - its not part of a road groupset. I Blame the OP :)

We've been here before, heres the Cranes with what looks like a 40t rear sprocket. Its just a phase, something 'new' to sell to those that bought 'new' last year only to find 'new' is now 'old' and that they just dont cut it enough in the trail centre show n tell anymore.

Cycling is such a poor business model - the bear minimum of maintenance can keep a bicycle running for decades. Shareholders dont want that, so up pops 'innovations' to improve whatever you'd already been doing to a perfectly acceptable standard for years before.

*heres another big rear sprocket -

Re:

I can see the benefit for many of removing the need for a front changer ... trimming is a pain. True though, it has become an expensive hobby - in 1980 you could get the best of everything for sub £1000. I was browsing the Pinarello store in Manchester and they have bikes you can ride away at £18-20K

But for a lardy lump like me the granny plus a 10spd enormity is wonderful.
