I know some of you guys are into hi fi systems and what not so ideas and input would be great.

Basically I'm having no luck trying to track down a pair of replacement drivers for my Mission speakers. Mission no longer stock then and politely offered zero help. Have found some that can be "made" to fit, a little worrying for £70 each me thinks.

Is this the going rate for woofers?

Cheers Jim

I had to replace the cones on the old set of speakers I use in the man cave after the suspension rubbers perished. I bought a pair from Mapplins.

LGF is the man to ask on the best way to go about these things, his background is in audio electronics, the chap does know a thing or two and can be persuaded to share his knowledge.

If you want the speakers to sound the same way as they did originally from Mission, then you'd be better off to check out one of the Hi Fi enthusiast websites. Every woofer is designed for a certain purpose and works ideally in certain enclosures (ported, sealed, bandpass, etc.). In other words, finding another 10" woofer and making sure it physically fits the enclosure won't ensure that it will sound as good as the one it replaces. There are some esoteric figures like Q, frequency response, Vmax, etc. and these sites or one of the mail-order speaker builder companies can use to find the right woofer for you. In the U.S. there are a couple big ones.
Parts Express seems to be more geared to your particular situation:

MarkerTek is another one and looks to have a U.K. website as well. Here's a link from their US site w/ speaker components:

Hope this helps.

Be careful with Mission replacement drivers. I brought some to replace the shattered white/clear polythene ones in (IIRC) a set of Mission 762 floorstanders. Not only were they not the same (were doped paper and black not clear/white polythene) they didn't fit either and I sent them back. I couldn't find any others that were exactly the same and as they had a habit of shattering any used ones would probably be only slightly better and fail sooner rather than later. I bit the bullet in the end and brought a set of Tannoy Mercury floor standers.

Carl.

problem with drive unit please.

Mission do not exist, they are just a brand name owned by IAG:

I am sad to see that they have acquired even more brand names since I was made redundant.

IAG products are made in a huge complex in China and the resulting products can be so bad, they have to be re-manufactured in the UK...

As for drive units designed for specific products, most manufacturers bought in products from other drive unit manufacturers such as Vifa or Dynaudio or SEAS.

However, Mission did make their own for a while which can make sourcing replacements a bitch and makes some models very hard to replace.

When I worked in R&D, most modifications were made to the speaker enclosures to make a specific driver work.

just looked up the model - unless you are really in love with them, its time to move on or keep an eye on ebay.

I have a spare 753 in case I damage my own 17 year old versions.

Unfortunately, when the Mission factory closed down, a huge amount of driver spares ended up at car-boot sales and ebay.

I didn't know you used to work for Mission (why would I, I suppose...)
The only Mission gear I ever owned was a Cyrus One amp, which I still regret parting with. I believe it is still around but long since gave up the ghost. I saw someone selling a Cyrus II and PSX in the local paper the other day for pennies, it gave me that "GO! GO! GO!" spending feeling which Jim is all too familiar with.
